Well. they still do... but..
There are different sized blocks that only take
the "physical space" that you can SEE them occupy.
For example In SE1 a "flat panel" took up the space
you could SEE plus the "space" the cube would displace,
In SE2 it only occupies the space you can SEE it occupy.
Now where it gets complicated is, Things like sloped blocks
are still the same as in SE1 Insofar as you cannot place in the
"unused portion of space" If that makes any sense.* I'ts hard to
explain to someone who has not played. Once you have, you will
understand right away.
*You can't make a cube out of 2 sloped blocks.
