Frequent freezing/crashing even after the update
Framerate updates are great and the game looks buttery smooth. However, I'm running into crashes that seem to get more frequent as I get further into the game. Playing on both Steam Deck and PC. It happens in all areas, during battle, during dialogue. I'm not using the fast forward feature. There's no stuttering leading up to it. The game just freezes up while music and sound effects continue to play.

Didn't have any of these issues the first 8 or so hours in, but since then I'm encountering at least one in between every save point.

I've had one freeze as described during a boss battle recently. Nvidia GPU.

I've been running into the same issue.

I tried playing it on Steamdeck, but it would freeze every 5 minutes, so I switched to PC which seemed to work.

I put about 7h into it yesterday on PC with no issues. Then I went to play it some more today, exact same setup on PC, and it has started crashing every five minutes again. I've validated the game files, updated my drivers, disabled overlays, tweaked settings. Nothing helps, it keeps freezing within 3-10 minutes of starting the game.

I have to say, Square Enix's track record with Chrono Cross re-releases has been pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad. I remember seeing the same issue on the PSN Classic version way back on PS3. There really hasn't been a stable way to play this game since the original PS1 version.

I'm pretty mad. 7h in and it's suddenly unplayable.

Edit: I'm trying it on another computer now, but this time in windowed mode at 1920x1080 and I haven't run into any issues yet. It's possible it might only be stable in windowed (and possibly borderless windowed) mode. That might be worth trying if anyone is running into the same issue.

Pretty much my experience as well.

- Deck locked up randomly pretty frequently, to the point of unplayable within the first couple hours.
- Switched to running on Windows 11 PC with a 2080ti, worked fine for roughly 10 hours...
- Now it sometimes locks up within minutes of starting, and sometimes it won't lock up for a couple hours. No rhyme or reason - walking around the map/town, in a cutscene, in a battle, finishing a battle, talking to people, etc.

It seems like it throws a fit for a few crashes back to back, but if I just keep pushing through, eventually it calms down and lets me play for a couple hours without any issue. It's like there's a magic session that seemingly has no problems and I just have to hope loading in will be that session. Hoping I can just push through the lockups since I'm almost at the end at this point, but it's been a pretty frustrating ride.

Playing on steam deck and also having freeze issues. Just got back to the Dragon Fort and its freezing every 10 minutes or so making progress impossible. What a pain in the ass.

I'm also having the same issues. It randomly freezes and I have to restart my pc to get it to shut down. I go way past the recommended specs for this game. I also just upgraded my graphics card and the old one was AMD, the new one is NVIDIA with no difference. It's to the point to where it is almost unplayable, beyond annoying to say the least.

I have the same issues. Just got into the viper manor and game start crashing when I grind :(

This is very frustrating seeing people have been having this for months. I just started after finally playing through Chrono Trigger. And after maybe 2 hours of total playtime over the last few days it’s frozen at least 10 times on me (same deal as others, the game locks up but the music still plays). Sometimes I can go 30 mins with nothing, or this last attempt it crashes twice in 20 mins. Very disappointing.

Yeah it completely stopped crashing when I played in Windowed mode.

It's not a great workaround because you can't really get as immersed, but it worked for me.

Turning off antialiasing seems to have fixed it for me. Two play sessions of about 2 hours each with no freezing.

“ I had the exact same issue until I applied this patch ( https://ntcore.com/?page_id=371 ). Making the game large address aware fixed all my freezing issues. Sadly it may be difficult to apply this patch without using a separate Windows machine, but once the modified executable is put onto the Deck, the game should be fully stable.

EDIT: It's worth noting that I had stability issues on my Windows machines as well with the game randomly freezing; patching the game EXE also fixed the game for my Windows machines as well.”

This is a copy-pasta of my post from another thread on this forum. I hope it helps more people not have freezing issues.

Thank you for this. It wasn't a complete fix—still had a couple crashes after patching, but they were MUCH less frequent and I was (finally) able to finish the game.

Ah, that bites. I just 100%'d the game and didn't get any crashes once it was 4GB patched :-/. Glad that it still helped mitigate the issue into making the game playable though. I was getting like a crash every hour or two pre-patch, which made the game much harder to enjoy when you're sitting there just praying that it doesn't crash every time you enter a battle or screen transition.
