I tried playing it on Steamdeck, but it would freeze every 5 minutes, so I switched to PC which seemed to work.
I put about 7h into it yesterday on PC with no issues. Then I went to play it some more today, exact same setup on PC, and it has started crashing every five minutes again. I've validated the game files, updated my drivers, disabled overlays, tweaked settings. Nothing helps, it keeps freezing within 3-10 minutes of starting the game.
I have to say, Square Enix's track record with Chrono Cross re-releases has been pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bad. I remember seeing the same issue on the PSN Classic version way back on PS3. There really hasn't been a stable way to play this game since the original PS1 version.
I'm pretty mad. 7h in and it's suddenly unplayable.
Edit: I'm trying it on another computer now, but this time in windowed mode at 1920x1080 and I haven't run into any issues yet. It's possible it might only be stable in windowed (and possibly borderless windowed) mode. That might be worth trying if anyone is running into the same issue.
- Deck locked up randomly pretty frequently, to the point of unplayable within the first couple hours.
- Switched to running on Windows 11 PC with a 2080ti, worked fine for roughly 10 hours...
- Now it sometimes locks up within minutes of starting, and sometimes it won't lock up for a couple hours. No rhyme or reason - walking around the map/town, in a cutscene, in a battle, finishing a battle, talking to people, etc.
It seems like it throws a fit for a few crashes back to back, but if I just keep pushing through, eventually it calms down and lets me play for a couple hours without any issue. It's like there's a magic session that seemingly has no problems and I just have to hope loading in will be that session. Hoping I can just push through the lockups since I'm almost at the end at this point, but it's been a pretty frustrating ride.
i'm playing on borderless still freezing, don't know about windowed mode. Do u still got issue now?
Mi equipo tiene una RTX3060 y 8gb de RAM, espero que haya pronto alguna solución por parte del soporte técnico....
Yeah it completely stopped crashing when I played in Windowed mode.
It's not a great workaround because you can't really get as immersed, but it worked for me.
EDIT: It's worth noting that I had stability issues on my Windows machines as well with the game randomly freezing; patching the game EXE also fixed the game for my Windows machines as well.”
This is a copy-pasta of my post from another thread on this forum. I hope it helps more people not have freezing issues.
Thank you for this. It wasn't a complete fix—still had a couple crashes after patching, but they were MUCH less frequent and I was (finally) able to finish the game.
Ah, that bites. I just 100%'d the game and didn't get any crashes once it was 4GB patched :-/. Glad that it still helped mitigate the issue into making the game playable though. I was getting like a crash every hour or two pre-patch, which made the game much harder to enjoy when you're sitting there just praying that it doesn't crash every time you enter a battle or screen transition.
