One of my OCs is named Julien. He's tanned skin, got a scar near his right eye, and has dirty blonde hair. As a kid it's totally spiky and wild, which funnily enough contrasts his personality completely. Even in the early stages of the game as an 8-year-old kid, he doesn't express much about anything, and like Cove, is extremely blunt. Most times though he prefers to stay silent since he just doesn't care enough to respond. Though he is often the bravest, easily ringing the old angry grand people's doorbell when Lizzie suggests so simply because he thinks it'll be amusing (he likes getting back at people he considers is jerks). His personality remains this way mostly throughout his life. Though, he does become slightly kinder, and obviously does show he has matured, since he doesn't get angry at people he considers has wronged him (*cough cough* Jeremy *cough cough* Who he punched at the birthday party *cough cough*).
At first when he meets Cove, he didn't care. He was completely indifferent to the boy since his dad rubbed Julien off the wrong way when he tried offering money to be Cove's friend. He wasn't outright rude to the boy, though. Unless Cove was rude to him first, to which, of course, Julien would be rude right back, since he's not a kid who lets that slide. I like to headcanon though that Julien begins seeing Cove in a better light (and vice-versa for Cove as well) is actually when Cove tries to run away that one time. Despite the two never exactly getting along, Julien just felt he knew where Cove was, and decided to find him all by himself. And what do you know? He does find him right at that sign that shows they would be exiting their small town. At first, Julien is angry, thinks Cove is stupid when learning he was trying to run away. But once hearing the reasoning, Julien realizes, just maybe, despite being a kid, he can understand. But despite understanding, Julien was a pretty down-to-earth boy, and convinced Cove they really should go back home, that despite what he may think, his dad would definitely notice him being gone, and will be completely worried sick.
When Cove thanked him for he did, Julien, just for a moment, thought Cove was someone who needed protecting.
After that summer, their indifferent relationship bloomed to that of a friendship, and the begginings of a crush. Now Julien sports a hairstyle much more tamed, one that grew out slightly longer, so his hair was now pulled back into a small ponytail. He wasn't as tall as Cove, but he definitely was still taller than Derek. Like I said, his personality hasn't changed much, but he's more kinder now in the sense that he realizes his blunt words in certain occasions comes off to others as him being rude. So he now thinks more properly, and can express what he means more clearly. When it comes to his crush on Cove, he easily denies it when others, like his sister, tries to tease him for it. But when Cove and him are by themselves, he easily finds himself teasing Cove by getting closer to him, and bravely saying things to Cove like he honestly believes the other boy is cute.
Julien really likes how easily Cove blushes, whether or not Cove 100% believes his words or not.
Their crushing friendship mostly consists of them simply just enjoying each other presence. They don't always talk, but that's okay. And even when they do talk, it's mostly Julien listening to Cove. Others may think of it as a one-sided conversation, but only the two of them needs to know that Julien listens intently to whatever Cove talks about, even if it's totally mundane.
The first time, I would think, Julien honestly wanted to kiss Cove is on that family trip the neighbors went on all together. And that's probably because that day was the first time Cove had ever really flirted with him. Talking about how he liked Julien's eyes (which were a golden color matching his hair). And of course, Julien being simply outrightly honest as always, responded with the words of "I like you." So, with a excitement buzzing underneath his skin that he's never really felt that strongly before then, it only made sense that he went along with that feeling; which consisted of him telling Cove to climb with him in the cot.
They were just so close, and Julien made it even more so by pressing against the taller boy. And while he wanted to, wanted to lean closer, Julien knows Cove. And he didn't want to scare the other, so he settled with sleeping close to him.
To Lizzie's greatest disappointment, and maybe even his parents as well, he didn't show an ounce of shame or embarrassment unlike Cove when his family learned of this little incident.
And Jesus, I can honestly write a whole lot more, but I think I'll end this off by saying that, of course, Julien was the one who kissed Cove first, Cove brings out Julien's more emotion side (more-so than even Julien's moms), and that despite no longer being angry or rash with out rudely other may treat him as a young adult, he easily finds himself forgetting that maturity and wanting to punch someone that's rude to Cove.
Another OC is an outgoing girl who went through a lot of confusion over her body (ie wanting to be a boy then later on going back to being a girl etc) and while she was still outgoing, she was kinda mean to cove. So they were just next door neighbors who didn't want anything to do with each other. But since i don't have teh DLCs, i couldn't really make her fall for Baxter or Derek. But my outgoing OC is Rin and she has strawberry blonde hair that remained in a bob.
So my first MC is Cassidy Masterson, an outgoing, energetic tomboy with a preference for physical activity and a disregard for personal boundaries. Tanned skin, dark, long, wild hair, golden eyes and a scar on her cheek. Tall girl, but no too tall. Like "I'm getting picked fast for basketball" tall. Also pretty curvacious when the time came to decide about that, because I figured I'd get her to slowly evolve from the "young tomboy" stereotype.
She's the type to not think about too much : either she likes people, or she doesn't, but still being open-minded (she didn't like Baxter much, for example, the guy's acting too much like a weisel for her taste).
She started just being friendly to Cove, trying real hard to get along with her bratty sister, and the like. She was the motor toward pushing our favorite boy into being more open and outgoing, and less abrasive with people.
Though, that was for step 1 and 2. Step 3, she grew up a bit, mentally. That's also when her relation with Cove went to Flirty. She started to be quite more touchy but also tended to blush more with his comments and compliments.
Also she learned to brush her hair so it didn't look like a lion's mane after a fight anymore.
Basically, she started being a bit calmer, though still energetic, optimistic and outgoing.
Also she adopted the anklet in a heartbeat.
And of course, the two became adorable lovebirds by the end of step 3.
I loved the game so much I just picked all DLCs to support the devs, and also to get more out of reruns.
I have basic ideas/plans for maybe two other characters.
A male one, probably a bit more forward towards Cove, more flirty and direct. I wanna make that boy blush because it's hilarious.
Other than that, I'm considering doing a run with... I guess a trans character maybe ? I dunno too much yet... But I think it'll probably be more the type to be shy and calm, needed to be led rather than making the first step, at least at first...
The first is Alex. Being raised around Shiloh, Derek, and of course Cove, she was always a tomboy. She never really got close to her sister until Liz moved out to start college. She flirted with Cove because she liked to tease him but it wasn't until the last couple years of high school that she realized she had deeper feelings for him. She noticed sparks of jealousy when he would hang out with Terri and Miranda, but once she got to know them she put those feelings aside and by the time they graduated she was as comfortable with them as she was with Cove. Well, almost; she never wore an anklet for them. During their last summer after high school Alex realized this wasn't some crush, she was in love with Cove. She gathered the courage to ask him out and, to no one's surprise, he said yes.
Growing up, Alex always had a rock-solid plan for her future: finish high school, get out of Sunset Bird and into the big city, go into business school, and build a successful career. She wouldn't give up on that dream, but knew she wanted to come back to Cove once she graduated college. Who knows, maybe they'll open up that pretzel stand together?
For Mizuki, it was love at first sight. Being around Cove always made her nervous, but excited. She is shy and quiet, never speaking first to someone (if she contributes to the conversation at all). People like Baxter and Jeremy intimidate her, and she never felt altogether comfortable around Cove's parents. She felt guilty about hiding the deal his dad tried to make with her, so she told Cove when they were thirteen. The results just made her feel more guilty and more uncomfortable around his family. However, her feelings for Cove never changed and as she got older she grew to like his parents, too.
In fact, family is the most important thing to Mizuki. She stayed very close to her own growing up, even her older sister. This also meant everyone could see how she felt about Cove, though she never was good at hiding her emotions. Being nervous, shy, and stumbling over her words while having a crush on a boy who is nervous, shy, and stumbles over his words left plenty of opportunity for playful banter around the house.
Mizuki was an average student and wished for a very simple life: to be a loving wife and supportive mother, much like the two moms who raised her. Of course, she could never admit that it was Cove Holden that she wanted to marry, that is far too embarrassing. After spending ten years together, he finally asked her out. Elated, she said yes, and they started making plans to move in together.
$20 to play with some kid? Ace did not hesitate to take it. But once he met him, Ace found Cove to be... kind of a downer. He was very disinterested in hanging out with Cove, as a child and teenager. They barely spoke at school and he didn't interact with Cove unless he absolutely had to, which was pretty often considering their parents were friends.
Ace has no tolerance for people who try to put others down, no matter the circumstance. When they were teens and Jeremy started to bully Cove, Ace jumped forward to defend him and the others had to hold him back. During high school Ace was the one who was bullied over a birthmark above his right eye, and this time Cove was the one to stand up for him, albeit peacefully (headcanon). Ace finally started to see him not as a random neighbor but as a friend.
They began hanging out more in high school and although they had really only started to bond over those few years, Cove apparently felt comfortable enough to climb into Ace's bedroom through the window unannounced. It was kind of weird, but Cove was kind of weird, so whatever. Ace coasted through school, he barely graduated, and had no interest in going to college. He already had a job, so he didn't need to. He didn't have any big plans for the future and tried his best to ignore it altogether. He and Cove relaxed over their last summer together and towards the end, Cove announced he was looking at apartments. The reality of the situation, of everyone growing up and moving on with their lives, hit Ace harder than he anticipated. Luckily, Cove calmed him down, and when he brought up the idea of living together, Ace figured, why not?
(edit: this was actually a platonic run, at least to the end of step 3)
Blake Last has dark hair and brown eyes, at first identifying as male but starts to go by they/them pronouns during step 3. They also dye their hair more as they grow up and have a different colour in stage 2 and 3. Blake ran away from Mr. Holden upon meeting him as they were an anxious child around strangers and was shy when first meeting Cove. Cove and Blake grow closer and become best friends and start to develop feelings for one another during their teen years. It isn't until the charity event in step three that they admit their feelings and officially become a couple.
Ruby Last has red hair and golden eyes, she loves having long hair and wearing dresses. She is a trans girl and officially starts going by she/her pronouns in step 2. She and Cove were always together since he was one of the only people in town who accepted her. They had a strong bond and stood up for one another. Out of curiosity, Ruby tries to kiss Cove during their vacation in step 2 but Cove rejects her. After the vacation he says he wants to try again and the two kiss. Freaking out in the aftermath, the two are awkward around one another and try to figure out what this means for them. They try to go back to the way things were before, but find that they cant. They like each other and want to be together. At the end of step 3, Ruby and Cove are engaged.
And my favourite, Alice Last.
Alice Last goes by she/her pronouns and is a bisexual icon with white hair and red eyes. She is also neurodivergent, when taken to the library to do homework she ends up doodling or daydreaming and events such as fireworks and going to the movie theatre often lead to sensory overload. Cove is always watching out for her needs and making sure she is comfortable. She does the same for him, making sure he is comfortable. The two are best friends and like to go surfing together. Their relationship starts to shift after they dance at the soiree in step 2 and during the vacation they fall asleep in the loft together. They dance around one another throughout all of high school and it isn't until Alice is planning on leaving to study abroad that the two realise their feelings. Cove voices his concerns about drifting apart at the restaurant in step 3, causing a distressed Alice to walk out. Cove follows her out of the restaurant and tearfully confesses to her. They finally share a kiss and plan to keep up a long distance relationship.
These are just my romance routes, I did some platonic routes as well, although I usually just use Alice again for those.
And since I'm nearly done with that one, I might as well share them.
So, my second run was the story of Jesse Ambers.
Jesse was born a boy, by after a few years starting nabbing his sister's clothes to wear. The natural "it's not yours" reaction changed to understanding when "he" kinda managed to explain that "he" didn't like boy clothes and prefered girl's "prettier" clothes, which led his family to understand. Thus, little boy Jesse became non-binary "them". (Obviously, this is all my head-canon as to where my character came from to start the game how they were)
Jesse Ambers was a redhead with long hair, freckles a little bit everywhere and bright green eyes. They mostly wore dresses, and enjoyed nice accessories and, later on, makeup and fashion.
Jesse was basically always a nervous mess. Strangers, strange places and crowded scenes were doing a number on them, and they were the type of kids to stay grabbing on their mom's dress rather than go play with unknown children.
The first while with Cove was, thus, a nervous indifferent relationship. Just as Cove had a rough time adjusting to Sunset Bird, Jesse had a rough time adjusting to the new kid, though they weren't the type to be anything but nice to everyone, and follow the group.
Growing up, they starting feeling like their body wasn't right. Something felt off and they felt awkward about it, without really knowing what. This would lead later on to hormones therapy which would help them feel a bit better in their skin as time went on. Though the fact that they were quite on the short side, and had grew to be chubby, didn't help at all in the self-confidence department.
Despite being a teen, they still were a nervous mess when things became too much. Also they didn't lose that tendency to tear up or outright cry, be it from happiness, emotion or being upset.
What really helped Jesse along, though, was Cove opinion. While they were fumbling about in their head not knowing who they were, could or should be, Cove's opinion on the matter was what made things start to click together in Jesse's mind : they didn't have to fit into any of society's boxes. They didn't have to figure out a gender to have an identity.
As such, it became less of a "who am I" than a "what makes me feel confortable in my own skin". Despite considering to switch to "she", they finally decided to keep with "them", neither male nor female, and the same time neither and somewhere in between. Or as Cove put it, Jesse was simply Jesse. They were their own person, and that was fine as they had the right to be.
Of course, this ended up making Jesse cry, as you probably guessed.
The first steps into adulthood and the budding relationship with Cove thanks to an unspoken and reciprocated crush helped them start to feel better about themselves. They didn't freeze as much in public situation, cried more out of happiness than anything else. But deep down, the anxiety was still there.
During the family dinner celebrating the kids goals and accomplishments, Jesse had a breakdown (which I got to entirely by mistake, but was so very perfect that I didn't roll back). They left the restaurant to lock themselves in the car and cry at too many changes happening, and the uncertainty of it all, and the dread of not having their footing anymore.
Followed the biggest family support session to ever grace the world, which sent them crying some more, although for a different reason.
And of course, their relationship with Cove bloomed, as no surprised. Being accepted to fully and deeply lifted a huge, so far unseen weight from Jesse's shoulders. They went on to live with Cove and pursue higher education, losing that social axiety that had kept with them for the last 15 years.
The only reason they ended up able to just ditch the dress on the beach to follow Cove for an underwear wimming session was the boy himself accepting them so fully that Jesse basically didn't care anymore about how they were perceived. Their body felt more confortable thanks to the previously mentionned hormone therapy, and only reinforced by Cove loving gaze.
Everything felt right. And Jesse was truly and completely happy.
I wrote a lot, but I honestly think this character has been, by far, my favorite. Despite myself being totally different from them, I felt so engaged during the whole time I played them that I cried mroe than once and, weirdly enough, felt kinda proud at how they grew up. It's dumb because it's just a series of choices but... I guess the writing is that good that they became just as real, to me ?
Harvey is pretty tall, athletic, has brown skin with freckles dotted on his cheeks, and has flowly golden brown hair he's always pushing around on his head. His eyes are an intense green. He often gets accused of being Derek's brother, which he find hilarious.
His personality is very social, charismatic, and outgoing. He's very similar to Kyra. He loves joking around with people, and he is a huge party animal. Sometimes he can be a little too impulsive, resulting in him feeling guilty afterwards. He also can be quite deceitful and it's hard to tell who he genuinely likes and doesn't like. However, he grows out of this bad habit in his adulthood.
Harvey hesitated, but took that 20 dollar bill. When he first met Cove, he thought it would be cool to have a new friend to hang out with. He didn't quite understand what happened with his parents at that age, but he understood as time went on. Through step 1 and 2, they were best friends and did pretty much everything together. But, in step 2 Harvey started feeling a weird, warm feeling whenever he looked at Cove. Lee said it was a crush, but Harvey went into denial. He was scared this would ruin their close bond, and tried to internally push these feelings away. His feelings bubbled up more when they were surfing, a hobby the two boy share their whole lives. However, in the RV, his impulsiveness got the better of him and he tried to kiss Cove. That's when he realised he had to accept his feelings, and planned on telling him about them.
Cove did it before he could, confronting him about what happened in the RV. Until Harvey was 16, they hadn't decided to be boyfriends or even bother trying to figure it out. They only grew closer, but kept their feelings private to others since they didn't want to see people's reactions. Especially Harvey.
A headcanon I've always had is that Harvey had type 1 bipolar disorder when he was 16. And to make it worse, he had really toxic and homophobic friends who pushed his bad habits even further, leading to him going to parties every night and getting girlfriends. His friends had nearly convinced him that having feelings for a boy would be 'embarrassing' and 'gross'. for months he slowly ignored his friends, family, and Cove.
His Moms confronted him and he eventually started taking medication. By the time step 3 was around the corner, Harvey was in a much better place, and had learned a lot. He does, and always will feel grateful that Cove waited for him and forgave him. This made Harvey promise himself he would always be there for his love.
In step 4, he lives with his fiance with pets and, eventually, kids.
I love this game so much it's literally my comfort world.
Guess I might as well quickly mention him.
Robin Sloan, a boy of tanned skin and dark hair who loved to get out there, run around and meet people. Quick witted as well, with a sense of humor that was lighthearted, maybe kinda mocking but never in a mean-spirited way. He also tended to boast and seem pretentious, but it as always in good fun.
When he met Cove, he immediatly felt interested in him, and even joked to his moms right away about how he was going to marry him, someday.
From there on out, he made it his personal mission to help Cove settle in and feel confortable around Sunset Bird, showing him cool stuff to do, nice places to see, trying to encourage him to meet people.
That didn't change growing up. He kept being as close as he could to the boy, supporting him whenever he got overwhelmed with something. Lee would often joke around about Cove being special to him, and he could only admit it.
He'd also start teasing Cove with comments and jokes, always getting a delighted laugh when he saw his reactions.
Robin started growing very tall right away, and all the outdoor activities gave him some good muscle definition. that made him even more confident, maybe over-confident even, and that self-esteem boost pushed him forward.
Learning his parents demise, he wasn't all too phased, having pretty much expecting something along those lines since he was clearly adopted. Though, he mainly felt for his sister and, when she came to him, felt only closer to her. No matter the fact they weren't blood-related, he considered their family as a unbreakable bond, even if she could be unsufferable at times. He'd always react to her outbursts and sour personality with a smile and a supporting heart anyway.
And of course, the RV trip got to be the perfect occasion for Robin to make some moves. Not only did he learn about what his dream boy like to see on other and secretly planned to start and anklet collection, he also invited him to sleep with him in the loft, and considered trying to kiss him before deciding against it, afraid to freak him out.
And yes, he did evidently ask Cove on a date à the country club's Soirée, and introduce him as such. He didn't care for anything other than have a great night with the boy.
With summer ending, and not being able to refrain himself any longer, Robin made two moves. First, he wore a few anklets at a time, to tease Cove but also to make a point that probably got too subtle for the green haired boy. The second move he pulled was to kiss Cove, sending him to freak out for a bit before managing to calm him down.
And as the akwardness of the dinner got everyone curious about what got Cove to bug out for a moment, Robin just outright announced it, having decided that he wouldn't let anyone stop them anyway.
Time kept on and the two of them were officially together. Robin kept pushing Cove to be more active, more social, basically leading him around to make sure they'd have fun together. He kept his habit of teasing his boyfriend, but also tended to be a little bit possessive when people started coming on to him, or mocked him. As nice, outgoing and open a person as he was, he wasn't about to let people attack Cove. Though, he was confortable with Baxter's outgoing personality since the guy respected Cove's wish of him to tone down the compliment and respect the two's relationship, even if he agreed completely Baxter's opinion of Cove.
Robin also started dying his hair pink and getting them shaved on the side and longer on top, as a proud and bombastic way to show his homosexuality. Not matter what people would say about him and throw at himself, he wouldn't care at all and just laugh at the face of hostility towards who he was.
He'd taken a job at the same restaurant as Cove did, on purpose obviously, to spend as much time as possible with him, and steal as many little moments as they could manage. His open and outgoing personality also got him popular with the clients, especially the ladies, though he was sorry to let them down by point out his sexuality and boyfriend.
He also introduced Cove to ORCA, since he had himself been member for a while, being the beach boy that he was.
And when Robin's moms pulled their stunt at the farmer's market, he simply reacted with a "whatever" attitude and reached out to Cove immediatly, considering that if they were gonna pull this stunt, he had no obligation to follow up on their attempt at forcing them appart for a moment.
Though, being the loving person that he was, he still got fudge for eveyone.
As for new people, Robin hit it off really well with Terri, the both of them being as obmbastic and forward as they were. And with their physical similarities to add to how close they were, people could sometimes think they were siblings.
Of course he also got very close to Miranda since her birthday years prior. Even though he had pretty much no romantic interest in women, she was especially adorable in his eyes, and he nearly dreaded the idea of not being her friend.
When Cove started reflecting on going jet-skying, Robin had a hunch, knowing Cove's relationship with it, that ths was going to go far deeper than just a fun ride on the waters. And whenhis boyfriend started reflecting on his parents, he immediatly supported and encouraged him to talk with them, following and waiting patiently, watching his green haired lover finally come to terms with old fears.
Life moved on with Robin looking enthousiastically forward to it. He moved in with Cove, and they started a little store together, keeping with their shared love of the sea. Robin also filled the house with more critters, as he loved animals.
Sensing his boyfriend's planning though, he impatiently waited until Cove gathered his courage to propose, and accepted in a heartbeat, tearingly proud of how far his futur husband had come to be able to do something like this without freaking out in the middle.
Ollie Lepik
(Estonian descent)
At age 8, he's pretty much a 'wild child'. Spends most of his time outdoors, climbing trees, getting cuts and bruises, needing a metric crap-ton of baths, much to his mothers' chagrin. Spends a lot of time playing with strays and weird bugs. Despite his nature, he's on the spectrum and RARELY speaks outside of mutters, but is extremely curious and very friendly when he feels comfortable around someone. His dark brown (nearly black) hair's often stringy and dirty thanks to spending most of his days outside, and he's avoided haircuts for the most part, leaving his hair unkempt, wild, and overgrown down to the top of his back. His body is littered in scars and bruises from being... Well... An adventurous brat.
He formed a bond almost instantly with Cove, despite the hardships of being on the spectrum and the difficulties of trusting others, solely on the fact that he understood what it meant to feel alone and like the world didn't understand and vice versa. I'd say it was a crush back then, but it'd be too young for him to really understand it.
Age 13, Ollie had grown to overcome some of the hardships that came with being on the spectrum; learning to speak out, identifying and expressing his emotions in ways others could understand, and overall learning to relax when around people he knew. He still didn't find comfort in crowds or even strangers, and only allowed a select few to physically touch him, even for a handshake. His mothers managed to convince him to get a hairstyle that suited a growing young man; in his case? He went with the obvious edgy emo style. He'd look back on that one day with a facepalm. Ollie stopped being so careless with himself thanks to Cove telling him not to climb tall trees or tease crabs on the beach; though some of the scars will be permanent.
Ollie began to understand the feelings he'd been feeling as he got older; and despite having two mothers, struggled with accepting that despite finding an interest in both binary sexes, it was a boy he'd caught feelings for. Despite being raised with an open mind and by loving parents, it still nagged at the back of his head if he should feel that way, wondered if he could have a kid of his own, and so forth. Nevertheless, Ollie took the leap and confessed himself, starting a slow, steady relationship with his neighbor.
Age 18, Ollie decided he preferred to be called by his full name, Oliver, even though it would have taken everyone ages to make the switch. By this age, he had worked on himself a great deal, being able to hold and lead conversations, express body language in appropriate ways in most cases, and learn to lead a nearly 'normal' life; but understood that autism will always be part of him, and will always be something to co-exist with and accept the parts he can't change. He still sported the same emo hair, but with piercings now. Great. Late 20's Oliver is going to have a field day with old photos. He got along with his friends, for the most part, but was always somewhat clingy to Cove, as he'd grown to rely on him for support and attention.
The two had been dating since they were 13, and their feelings only deepened since then; they did mostly everything together. He had come to terms with what he felt for another guy, and accepted it as something that's part of who he is, and that nothing was wrong with it. At some point, Oliver decided to pop the question down the road, because, why not? It was extremely nerve-wracking and might have been a spur of the moment, but in the span of 10 years, he came to realize that nothing could break what they both had, and they both took the next step into the future.
...Still haven't jumped into part 4 yet. Kind of reluctant. >> Don't like good stories to end.
Hope my addition wasn't weird.
