First playthrough done! - thoughts and questions (SPOILERS, obviously)
Sooo! I'm done with my first playthrough! It was a wild ride! Such a rollercoaster of emotions.
What makes this game even more incredible is the fact I actually enjoyed it so much, considering I don't really like the growing-up theme, nor games or books with huge/multiple time-gaps.

I think the only thing that bothered me overall was the fact it was written in second person. Since I never identify with the MC of any game (I like to see myself as some kind of guardian angel/spirit to the MC), having the game referring to him as "you" distracted me a bit and broke the immersion here and there, but I tried not to pay too much mind to it. And really, it's the only flaw the game has. It made me uneasy at times, but a lot of time I was too focused on the story to notice anymore.

Overall, the game was sooo touching in so many ways. And I loved most of the characters. I think the only ones that didn't click with me were Shiloh and Derek. And well, there's not THAT much of them anyway, so it wasn't an issue.
Cove himself and Lee were my favorites I think, though, with Baxter not being far behind. Man I can't wait for the new moments of Step 3 to be out, since he'll probably have some more screen time in these.

I'm also really really happy at the amount of choices you could make about how the MC felt about basically EVERYTHING. Himself, other people, events...

Also, I have seen another thread where someone was saying the game lacked intimacy for them, but curiously, I didn't feel that way. I think it may be because my MC is demisexual too, and while he's extremely brave and self-confident in all matters except for how he looks, he still takes his time in love. Sure, maybe his pace is a bit faster than Cove's but considering they're still both demisexuals, it makes sense for him to understand the need to wait and go slowly.
Though of course, I'm still interested about the matter and how will Step 4 and R-18 DLC tackle it.

I have a couple of questions after this playthrough though. Some of them COULD be answered by me replaying in a different way, but as weird as it may sound, I almost always consider my first playthrough as "canon", when I play a game with mutliple paths/endings, so I'll feel weird if I replayed in any different way.

- About Jeremy:
Is it possible to actually become friends with him? And if you do, does he appear (physically or at least via phone calls/texts) in Step 3? My character wasn't shy, but he also wasn't really friendly towards people except his close circle of usual friends, so it was natural for him not to try and be friends with Jeremy once he acted like a douche the first time. But while my MC didn't like him, I actually did, so I maaay tweak my second playthrough a bit, if that's possible.

- About Miranda:
Opposite of Jeremy - while I don't intend to try, is it possible NOT to become friends with her? My MC and Cove liked her and Terri a LOT in Step 3, but the "in between" stated that they became close because they spent time with her on her birthday, sooo...

- About Shiloh:
I don't care much about him, but I'm curious - is it possible for him to act friendly towards the MC and his sister when they meet him again? My MC wasn't all that friendly with him when they were kids, after all...

- About the "Cove editor" (or whatever it's called):
I've noticed in the in betweens that when it comes to Cove, you can click to edit his looks, his behaviour, both or neither. But I'm a bit confused by the screen... If I pick "neither", does that mean I leave it up to the consequences of how my MC interracted with him, or does it default to something? Since I wanted it to be the most organic possible, I selected neither, but I'm unsure if that was the right choice for what I wanted.

- About Step 3, once you hit "summer ended":
At some point, the gang decides to go to a restaurant (picked the exotic one, if that's important, but I don't think so). Cove talks about his plans - moving and so on. And the player is prompted to select MC's reaction. I don't remember all choices, but well, my first plan was to go with him having a bittersweet feeling. It seemed to me like a sensible option, since it was a nice thing, but at the same time, things would change. But then, my MC got extremely distressed and stressed out, and ended up going away alone and stuff like that, and I was really uneasy and bothered, since... well, basically, it was out of character. He was always very strong and steadfast, and certain about the future, eager for it to come and so on. And his panic at that point was the exact opposite. I ended up going back and picking the answer that went along the lines of "his heart swelled with pride", and well, that was more in line with his overall personnality, but I was bothered by not being able to pick the bittersweet option without him freaking out.
I realize all too well how hard it is to code a game with that level ot customization, but still, I'd rather report how weird it felt to me - almost as if it was a bug, as if the game should check the MC's personnality in order to determine his exact reaction, but didn't. If it wasn't a bug, then maybe phrase the selection a bit differently to show it really bothers the MC?
What happened there? Was it a bug, or simply a choice that is easy to misinterpret?

- About CGs:
This one is straightforward. Since I'm not going to replay in any different way, aside from maybe Jeremy related things, depending on the answer for my first question, I'd like to know how do you unlock two of the CGs. Just for the record. Basically asking to know the memory it's in and feelings towards Cove status, each time.
Step 1 lower 1st, and Step 2 lower 3rd.

- About CG thumbnails:
I've noticed the thumbnails of the CGs for steps 2 and 3 sometimes reflect how Cove looked in my playthrough, and sometimes not. Is it intended because the thumbnail are generic regardless of the CG variant the player unlocks, or is it a bug and it should reflect the first/latest/whatever variant one unlocked?

- About viewing CG variations:
Also, is it possible to switch between variations of a CG? While I obviously don't have look variants, there are still different facial expressions and gestures, but when I click a second time on the picture, it just goes back to the menu.

I know that's a lot... but still, thank you in advance!

firstly, I'm not a dev, I'm a patron of gb patch, but I've been answering a few questions I know the answer to. :) I can say that I've beta tested this game to heck and back since even the initial demo was released so I do know this game quite well.

I also don't self insert, but I don't mind first person. most vns are written this way so I've gotten used to it. :) I just see VN's as miniature rpgs. create a character, give them a name and start the story. :)

Both Jeremy and Shiloh are cameo characters from GBPatch's XOXO Droplet's series they are teens and dateable jerk boyfriends for a female lead. Jeremy grows from being a mean kid to being a depressed mopey teen and Shiloh, well, you got a taste of it, when you met him when he got older. as the devs like to call him...a spotted snake. Neither are friend options in this game. they are only cameos.

as far as I know, your character, Cove, Miranda, and Terri become friends. I mean, no one said your character had to be close friends. on the phone initially there is even an option to be annoyed with her when she says she spots your character and cove.

you're third point, my guess it's not a bug, it was the way it was written, but given the type of feedback I've sent over the period of time of working with the devs as a beta tester they love giving options if it seems doable and it can work with the script and branching options. :)

as for the CG's I've heard there have been issues with the cove creator causing issues. when we were testing the game we were often given a heads up that if we used it at all we should go though all the options first and then select what we wanted for cove. I don't know if that would fix the CG issues or not.

btw, you are correct with the option of choosing neither. that's what you pick if you want the game to just work as intended and have the Cove that develops naturally. I've only used the cove creator recently myself. I finally wanted a short haired Cove in my game. For some reason I never seem to get that version. lol

They actually have an official CG guide in the Steam Guides section: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2292507529

(And as a side note, I also wish we could've had the Shiloh scene go differently :( )

Thanks!
Wow, I actually have XOXO, but I didn't even realize it was the same devs or the fact these characters appear in it. I think it's because I didn't really play it yet. Gives me an incentive to start it though, since I really really like Jeremy.

As for the first person thing, well, while I prefer third person, I do like first person too, but this is second. I mean, I like it when the game is from the PoV of the MC, and the text is like "I thought X" / "I did X" and things like that. It's okay, because it gives personnality to the character him/herself. While a game that says "You thought X" / "You did X" takes off that personnality a bit.
I feel like the game adresses me as a player, and I'm not supposed to be part of the universe. I don't know if I'm making myself clear?

For the CGs, I didn't have issues when viewing the correct CGs though, only the thumbnails (and well, the fact I can't check the various expressions). I'm glad I did understand how it works in game though.

It's funny though, Cove had short hair in my playthrough. I didn't even think it was possible for him to have long hair before seeing one of the "wrong" thumbnails, where he had long hair and glasses (he doesn't have glasses past Step 1 in my game) - it weirded me out so much XD

Hmm okay, I thiiink I see, if I understand correctly how the guide works. Thanks.

I don't really mind how the scene with Shiloh went, actually, since I really don't care at all about him XD
But I was curious if that was impacted by how the MC acts with him during Step 1. Considering my MC wasn't very friendly to him, it would make sense for him to act like that, but I couldn't be certain.
nah, you're view point about you're preference in how you want to read a story is clear. :D I was just saying in my bumbling way that I agree with you that I don't self insert either. :D I am myself all day, why would I want to be that in a game? but even when I play a VN that uses "you" I hate the word immersive because it's been so overused, but I have to agree that once I commit a name and a personality to a character that the "me" the game is referencing is the character I created, not me the player. that's what I meant as VN's being miniature rpgs.

haha, yeah, even Nate the uptight classmate of Shiloh's that yells at the MC and Liz is one of the other potential boyfriends. lol, his mini addition even in text only cracked me up as being a fan of the devs. :D the way he yelled. even the fact he was upset at them standing in the way was such a "Nate" thing to be upset about. that small inclusion is one of the tiny reasons why I love and support these wonderful people. :) btw, they also have a horror comedy spin off called XOXO blood droplets. lol they are still working on the dlc, but the free part has been released. :)

*GBPatch plug* this is for anyone that happens to stumble upon this post!
they also made Lake of Voices and A Foretold Affair . the first is a free horror game! It is *so* different from Our LIfe you probably would have no clue that it was made from the same devs unless you know, already know that. lol :D
the second is a steampunk fantasy romance and GBpatch's first game. like Our Life the player has the ability to choose he/she/or they for the MC, but there is a sprite because they game is about the difference between the the type of people that the MC belong to (magical people or abnormal) and non magical people (or normals)
the love interests for that one :one male, one female and one nonbinary.

The reason I love GBPatch so much is that all their games are unique. you never know what they are going to come up with next. Well, I do know because I am a supporter of their pateron, but you know, before then. lol. All I really knew, just like I know now is that whatever they make it will always be a wonderful game that I will fall in love with when it is released. :)
Kurozora Konoi Nov 24, 2020 @ 8:37am
I'm such a blind dork XD
I own A Foretold Affair via itch (I followed it during the entire developement) and Lake of Voices too, here on Steam. I usually have at least a minimal level of awareness about what else some devs did, but apparently I totally derped out this time! Funny considering I have all of their "main games", and with DLCs to boot, except for the outfits for A Foretold Affair cause I don't really care about outfits.

I don't have Blood Droplets, but I'm not very fond of spin-offs and/or AUs overall, so I don't think I'll be getting it. The only spin-off DLCs I ever got for any games, if I'm not mistaken, are the ones for Andromeda Six. And I'm not even sure the thing's on Steam...

But now that I know about the cameo thing, that motivated me to finally play the regular XOXO Droplets. Can you believe I got this game more than a year ago, and in the end never got to play it. I guess it's because it has a planning system and stats to deal with and stuff like that, and I always prefer pure VNs or VN-RPG hybrids.
the best thing about the original XOXO Droplets is that if you don't care for all of the planning system the devs have built in cheat codes and they are all in the guide part of steam! I am a rpg nerd so I don't mind when vns and rpgs mix. lol I just have a lot of overlapping interests so I'm glad that vns have

You are in luck, one of the upcoming plans is for GBPatch to release an updated version of XOXO Droplets as a pure VN. I'm not sure with all the Our Life stuff happening when that is coming out, but I do know it was officially announced some time ago on their socials so I'm not, like, spilling the beans here or anything. I know that via pateron we did a *lot* of polling on trimming down the outfits for the guys from the original version and various things to get it together, but with this game being the main priority I'm not sure when that's being released. :)
Kurozora Konoi Nov 24, 2020 @ 10:13am
That's okay, I'm not unable to play stat raisers - I just don't like that system very much.
I do like actual RPG-VN hybrids, as in, RPGs with combat and levelling, that also have VN segments, or VNs with combat systems, like the tactical RPG/VN Utawarerumono.
Not exactly the same as stats in games like XOXO Droplets.

I think I'm too proud to use cheats haha! I rarely even use guide, so yeah.

I'm still happy about the pure VN version though! But I don't mind waiting.

And I just realized these are also the same devs who made Floret Bond, one of my favorite demos ever played. I just hope the project wasn't scrapped, since the last update was in early 2019. This is one of the only two games that made me hyped for a polyamorous relationship. I'm not usually into that.
Verlys Gaming LIfe Nov 24, 2020 @ 11:40am
(i just sent you a friend request. I don't normally do such a thing , but this has been kind of fun. :) )

it's still up on the Pateron. As far as I remember I think the main dev said that they *really* want to make that game, but Our Life stuff is priority and I think there is some XOXO series stuff that is in the window and there are just too many pots and not enough hands for a small indie dev. :)
Kurozora Konoi Nov 24, 2020 @ 11:50am
Yeah, I know how it is. But at least if it's still there, there's hope.

And thanks - I've accepted the request!

@Verlys Gaming Life Hi! I don't know if you are still replying to comments from this post but I've seen you respond to alot of the dicussions here and you mention that you followed this game / indie company in development. I wonder how does one get "in the know" of supporting games / developers. Where or how do you find out about upcoming games that are worth supporting. After finishing OL, I'm really interested in further supporting them and other indie companies as well :)
Kurozora Konoi Dec 8, 2020 @ 11:01am
I know the question was not directed to me, but usually you can get in touch with the devs on twitter and tumblr, and supporting on Patreon and Kickstarter helps. Lots of devs are also pretty active on itch, so you can talk there. And then, there are devs who have discord servers for their games/studios. It's not that hard - I'm pretty "in touch" with some other devs so yeah

Thanks for answering too! Cool, I will go check check em out~ Itch.io looks pretty interesting. If you don't mind asking, are there other VN/otome games like OL made by indie companies that you are also following?
Kurozora Konoi Dec 8, 2020 @ 1:11pm
Like Our Life? Mhh... not really? Thing is, I usually prefer VNs with a defined MC and with choices of love interests.
Also, I tend to prefer darker games. Things that are serious, depressing, heavy... Or very fantasy oriented, if not that. Both would be the best, though.
Our Life is an exception among my games, really.

Things I had followed in the past... Well, The Letter, My Burning Heart... Oh yeah, I tend to prefer BL than otome, too.
Right now I'm closely following Andromeda Six.
hey, @Saphira Lazuli, sorry, I haven't been around much the last couple days, I've been stressed out over life stuff and my body finally reached a point of shutting down and I've been sleeping a lot lately.

anyway, Yeah, these particular devs the reason I'm "in the know" is because I've been a patreon of them for a couple years now. I've had been following them on the tumblr blog because I had already played all of the games they had released and really wanted to start helping support them so I joined inittially as a fan of the xoxo droplets series from this dev and they happened to be at the planning and polling stage of Our LIfe when I joined.

some of those early decisions were which cameo from xoxo droplets would make it into Our LIfe other than Shiloh, who was already decided by the devs because he talked about Lizzy in that game. All of GBpatche's modern games are in the same universe. So, no one from A Foretold Affair could show up because that's a fantasy steampunk game. but if it's a modern game they are all in the same universe. I actually voted on a different jerk boyfriend.....Everett. a foul mouthed 8 year old would have been too funny, but I of course have no issues that Jeremy won. The game would not be the same without Jeremy ruining everyone's fun with is angry young boy phase.

You should check out Itch as Koro has suggested it's, like, the indie game version of steam. and it's easier for folks to upload their games there. they can have a game on there for years before they could ever get it released here. the only down side to that is that there are a lot more demos of games that never make it as well, but hey at least they were trying.

and on Itch if you follow a indie dev they frequently post updates on what they are working on and any updates on the current game you're following. it's easier to keep in touch with whoever you're following.

for an example of another dev that you should check out here or on Itch is.
Lunaris Games they have one game that's on here that's on a bimonthly releases but they have a full game released on Itch and I totally loved it. they are also working on the third game and just had a successful kickstarter. sadly, I wasn't able to fund this one, but hopefully, I can help the devs in some other way.
