I also don't self insert, but I don't mind first person. most vns are written this way so I've gotten used to it. :) I just see VN's as miniature rpgs. create a character, give them a name and start the story. :)
Both Jeremy and Shiloh are cameo characters from GBPatch's XOXO Droplet's series they are teens and dateable jerk boyfriends for a female lead. Jeremy grows from being a mean kid to being a depressed mopey teen and Shiloh, well, you got a taste of it, when you met him when he got older. as the devs like to call him...a spotted snake. Neither are friend options in this game. they are only cameos.
as far as I know, your character, Cove, Miranda, and Terri become friends. I mean, no one said your character had to be close friends. on the phone initially there is even an option to be annoyed with her when she says she spots your character and cove.
you're third point, my guess it's not a bug, it was the way it was written, but given the type of feedback I've sent over the period of time of working with the devs as a beta tester they love giving options if it seems doable and it can work with the script and branching options. :)
as for the CG's I've heard there have been issues with the cove creator causing issues. when we were testing the game we were often given a heads up that if we used it at all we should go though all the options first and then select what we wanted for cove. I don't know if that would fix the CG issues or not.
btw, you are correct with the option of choosing neither. that's what you pick if you want the game to just work as intended and have the Cove that develops naturally. I've only used the cove creator recently myself. I finally wanted a short haired Cove in my game. For some reason I never seem to get that version. lol
(And as a side note, I also wish we could've had the Shiloh scene go differently :( )
Wow, I actually have XOXO, but I didn't even realize it was the same devs or the fact these characters appear in it. I think it's because I didn't really play it yet. Gives me an incentive to start it though, since I really really like Jeremy.
As for the first person thing, well, while I prefer third person, I do like first person too, but this is second. I mean, I like it when the game is from the PoV of the MC, and the text is like "I thought X" / "I did X" and things like that. It's okay, because it gives personnality to the character him/herself. While a game that says "You thought X" / "You did X" takes off that personnality a bit.
I feel like the game adresses me as a player, and I'm not supposed to be part of the universe. I don't know if I'm making myself clear?
For the CGs, I didn't have issues when viewing the correct CGs though, only the thumbnails (and well, the fact I can't check the various expressions). I'm glad I did understand how it works in game though.
It's funny though, Cove had short hair in my playthrough. I didn't even think it was possible for him to have long hair before seeing one of the "wrong" thumbnails, where he had long hair and glasses (he doesn't have glasses past Step 1 in my game) - it weirded me out so much XD
Hmm okay, I thiiink I see, if I understand correctly how the guide works. Thanks.
I don't really mind how the scene with Shiloh went, actually, since I really don't care at all about him XD
But I was curious if that was impacted by how the MC acts with him during Step 1. Considering my MC wasn't very friendly to him, it would make sense for him to act like that, but I couldn't be certain.
haha, yeah, even Nate the uptight classmate of Shiloh's that yells at the MC and Liz is one of the other potential boyfriends. lol, his mini addition even in text only cracked me up as being a fan of the devs. :D the way he yelled. even the fact he was upset at them standing in the way was such a "Nate" thing to be upset about. that small inclusion is one of the tiny reasons why I love and support these wonderful people. :) btw, they also have a horror comedy spin off called XOXO blood droplets. lol they are still working on the dlc, but the free part has been released. :)
*GBPatch plug* this is for anyone that happens to stumble upon this post!
they also made Lake of Voices and A Foretold Affair . the first is a free horror game! It is *so* different from Our LIfe you probably would have no clue that it was made from the same devs unless you know, already know that. lol :D
the second is a steampunk fantasy romance and GBpatch's first game. like Our Life the player has the ability to choose he/she/or they for the MC, but there is a sprite because they game is about the difference between the the type of people that the MC belong to (magical people or abnormal) and non magical people (or normals)
the love interests for that one :one male, one female and one nonbinary.
The reason I love GBPatch so much is that all their games are unique. you never know what they are going to come up with next. Well, I do know because I am a supporter of their pateron, but you know, before then. lol. All I really knew, just like I know now is that whatever they make it will always be a wonderful game that I will fall in love with when it is released. :)
I own A Foretold Affair via itch (I followed it during the entire developement) and Lake of Voices too, here on Steam. I usually have at least a minimal level of awareness about what else some devs did, but apparently I totally derped out this time! Funny considering I have all of their "main games", and with DLCs to boot, except for the outfits for A Foretold Affair cause I don't really care about outfits.
I don't have Blood Droplets, but I'm not very fond of spin-offs and/or AUs overall, so I don't think I'll be getting it. The only spin-off DLCs I ever got for any games, if I'm not mistaken, are the ones for Andromeda Six. And I'm not even sure the thing's on Steam...
But now that I know about the cameo thing, that motivated me to finally play the regular XOXO Droplets. Can you believe I got this game more than a year ago, and in the end never got to play it. I guess it's because it has a planning system and stats to deal with and stuff like that, and I always prefer pure VNs or VN-RPG hybrids.
You are in luck, one of the upcoming plans is for GBPatch to release an updated version of XOXO Droplets as a pure VN. I'm not sure with all the Our Life stuff happening when that is coming out, but I do know it was officially announced some time ago on their socials so I'm not, like, spilling the beans here or anything. I know that via pateron we did a *lot* of polling on trimming down the outfits for the guys from the original version and various things to get it together, but with this game being the main priority I'm not sure when that's being released. :)
I do like actual RPG-VN hybrids, as in, RPGs with combat and levelling, that also have VN segments, or VNs with combat systems, like the tactical RPG/VN Utawarerumono.
Not exactly the same as stats in games like XOXO Droplets.
I think I'm too proud to use cheats haha! I rarely even use guide, so yeah.
I'm still happy about the pure VN version though! But I don't mind waiting.
And I just realized these are also the same devs who made Floret Bond, one of my favorite demos ever played. I just hope the project wasn't scrapped, since the last update was in early 2019. This is one of the only two games that made me hyped for a polyamorous relationship. I'm not usually into that.
it's still up on the Pateron. As far as I remember I think the main dev said that they *really* want to make that game, but Our Life stuff is priority and I think there is some XOXO series stuff that is in the window and there are just too many pots and not enough hands for a small indie dev. :)
And thanks - I've accepted the request!
Thanks for answering too! Cool, I will go check check em out~ Itch.io looks pretty interesting. If you don't mind asking, are there other VN/otome games like OL made by indie companies that you are also following?
Also, I tend to prefer darker games. Things that are serious, depressing, heavy... Or very fantasy oriented, if not that. Both would be the best, though.
Our Life is an exception among my games, really.
Things I had followed in the past... Well, The Letter, My Burning Heart... Oh yeah, I tend to prefer BL than otome, too.
Right now I'm closely following Andromeda Six.
anyway, Yeah, these particular devs the reason I'm "in the know" is because I've been a patreon of them for a couple years now. I've had been following them on the tumblr blog because I had already played all of the games they had released and really wanted to start helping support them so I joined inittially as a fan of the xoxo droplets series from this dev and they happened to be at the planning and polling stage of Our LIfe when I joined.
some of those early decisions were which cameo from xoxo droplets would make it into Our LIfe other than Shiloh, who was already decided by the devs because he talked about Lizzy in that game. All of GBpatche's modern games are in the same universe. So, no one from A Foretold Affair could show up because that's a fantasy steampunk game. but if it's a modern game they are all in the same universe. I actually voted on a different jerk boyfriend.....Everett. a foul mouthed 8 year old would have been too funny, but I of course have no issues that Jeremy won. The game would not be the same without Jeremy ruining everyone's fun with is angry young boy phase.
You should check out Itch as Koro has suggested it's, like, the indie game version of steam. and it's easier for folks to upload their games there. they can have a game on there for years before they could ever get it released here. the only down side to that is that there are a lot more demos of games that never make it as well, but hey at least they were trying.
and on Itch if you follow a indie dev they frequently post updates on what they are working on and any updates on the current game you're following. it's easier to keep in touch with whoever you're following.
for an example of another dev that you should check out here or on Itch is.
Lunaris Games they have one game that's on here that's on a bimonthly releases but they have a full game released on Itch and I totally loved it. they are also working on the third game and just had a successful kickstarter. sadly, I wasn't able to fund this one, but hopefully, I can help the devs in some other way.
