We indeed have to release functionality and its tutorial at once to prevent players' frustration.
I agree, Regional without a coach yard is tricky to hold them on platforms or spare track. Maybe the new shunting options will help with that, which is a future update I believe. I find it easier to build up red points with one time freight, you can usually have a station that can hold 2 to 3 at a time, plus better cash. Once the coach yard is available I go straight for that, and after that is running, ditch the one time freight and re-purpose those holding platforms. I usually find that I have way more red points than green afterwards.

We are in the middle of reworking the progression through the game.
Simply said: green points will unlock upgrades needed for the green trains (including automation, unlike now). Red points will unlock upgrades needed for red trains (like shunting commands, shunting sensor and, finally, the coach yard.
