Sometimes there is enough space to build a wye to turn them or you can make use of a branche-line for that. The best thing is imo to be carefull when accepting contracts and don't accept those who make you train go backwards for a long time where you can't handle it. Freight give less problems because you mostly have enough time. IC's can give more trouble.
InterCities should only need loops on the most active station on the map due to how the game generates contracts. Trains that stop in Coach Yards can be dispatched from the yard in reverse to send them the right way, and all other intermediate stations will be between whatever border stations the game chose to put in the contract.
For that largest station, you can usually get away with a loop on one side of the station early in the game - Later, you can utilize tunnels to help fit in more in the tight space.
