Sometimes all it takes is for a sister to reach out her hand ;) The secret ending might have something exciting for you though! We hope to be able to make Sense 2 (and 3) someday!
Questions I have about the story.
1) How did Mei get saved in the end to have her be alive and well in her secret ending? Just a little text blurb or a few more expository illustrations would've been better than "Well she's ok now, and is a ghost hunter". It seems that Maiko was able to reunite all of Mei's 3 souls, but how? She saw one get dragged down to hell.
2) How was Brian Mak turned into a Jiangshi if the people who turn him into a one had died?
The big Jiangshi on the 7th floor must have been Brian Mak, nobody else planned to be the new perfect puppet by Fei Fei and Hwang Wah Guong. However Fei Fei's got a giant gunshot in her forehead so she must've died in the shoot out. Hwang's obviously a ghost, and must have died too, but did he die afterward and turn Brian into a Jiangshi? It's implied everyone died that night in 1983, but I didn't a gunshot wound on him. Further it is implied that Fei Fei is more powerful than Hwang, who can't leave building while Fei can haunt you before you lose your ID under that car. So if anybody turned Brian into a Jiangshi, it seems to be Fei.
3) How is Brian Mak related to the protagonist Mei Mak? Distant relative?
4) What was the significance of the flashback in Brian Mak's room, where child Mei sees a woman (mother presumably) holding a fork? Was the mother going crazy and try to kill the daughter? It seems Fei Fei was trying to reveal something to Mei that she had forgotten.
5) What is the significance of the PDA in Fei Fei's room? How is it there? Did Fei bring it as a ghost? The current theory seems to be that Fei was posing as a living person and was really Mei's date, and lured Mei into the building. It's a stretch, but ok. But how about why? What does Fei gain by luring somebody to her that is powerful enough to defeat her?
6) What is on the tape that is found in the leasing office desk, that when played in the salon Mei will remark the voice sounds familiar & wonders if the person mentioned her name?
7) What murder did Kevin Ho witness? I understand he was then able to see ghosts, resulting in him cutting off body parts & dying, but was it just a random murder?
8) What is the point of the 6th floor Jiangshi? You can't defeat her, you can't make her follow you anywhere significant (inside elevator to 7th floor, stay in hallway so others in epilogue see a Chinese Zombie standing in middle of hallway as part of their investigation). You can't use the 603 door to hide in, since you don't have any Fu's. What was her point?
9) What is the significance to the submachine gun? It's obviously the gun Brian used to gun down everyone the night of the massacre, Fei Fei having the bullets for it imply she provided the bullets (or otherwise assisted him) in carrying out the massacre. But what is the point to have Mei use the same sub machine gun? It's like she was going to recreate the scene, but for what reason, and nobody else is alive to be able to shoot. It seems the cops were trying to enter the door before Mei fired her gun, so it is not likely her gunshots alerted the police to find her. Further, the police trying to break into the Club Room door while Mei was struggling with those hand ghosts trying to drag her to hell, does not align with police detective's statement that she was out for 15 minutes before police found her (unless she was out of her body the entire time she was in club room, fighting with her spirit against Fei).
10) Is the female Jiangshi made from the corpse of Fei Fei's mom? Lai Gwok Jong mentions that he had a special corpse from his hunt that would be a trophy to Father Yip, and this was right around the time Father Yip's wife died plus when Hwang was creating his Jiangshi.

Little touches of the story and game I loved.
* Maddie Mao put "Lost cat" flyers in the building. Later you find that Hwang had an animal coffin with scratch marks on the side, to be used in sacrifices of his dark magics.
* Little ghosts everywhere. Go to 301 with the blown out wall, see a ghost construction worker with pipe sticking out of him. Go to the catwalk between 501 & 506, see a ghost suicide jumper. About to exercise Thanh "Tony" Nguyen's ghost, see his sister's ghost by his photo stand. Go to arcade, see janitor ghost with mop. In good priest Daoshi room, see beautiful butterfly ghosts. Most weirdly of all, after exercising Thang/Tony's ghost, you could see some beautiful pink "goddess" ghost before you exited the room.
* I didn't catch it the first time, but the peeping tom ghost is the long lost older brother of the woman he was peeping on! The picture with the American Vietnam war soldier had two children next to him, an older boy holding a baby, those were the ones who you dealt with in the game.
* Thang/Tony's hands are somewhat unique in that the long fingers end in keys. This is significant because he is the key master to the entire apartment, able to make keys to any room, but I think it's also a nod to how he's always stealing stuff (even from you). That long key finger that you find must have been one his "fingers", but when you check it in reality it's just another key.
* Mariko was being sued by her cheating ex-husband, was being forced to give back all the wedding gifts/money, but it turns out the law firm belonged to the family of her ex-husband
* The ghosts that drag down Eddie Xu's ghost are the ghosts of the wife/daughter/brother he left behind in China
* Every once in a while you see things move. A cup resting on the table might fly at you. A mirror cracks in the salon and a chair rotates. But the best one of all, which I only got to trigger once, was in the laundromat. There was a rack of clothing hanging on the wall, a ghost appeared there as if it was wearing the clothing, and it dropped something on the floor. It was like the ghost was being hanged to death.
* Did like seeing the cameos of backers. I think that's a very cool thing to do.
------------------------
Some recommendations, if I may be so bold.
* Combination lock: In game clues say "Left 03, Right 10, Left 06, Right 07", but for me it was more like "Right 30, Left 10, Right 60, Left 70".
* Gallery Mode: No excuse not to have this, should definitely be an unlockable after 1 play through. Gallery to show all graphics for Cutscenes and deaths, and to really blow us out of the water, main characters sprites, npc sprites, or even concept art.
* Multiple endings for the next game, and branching paths. Expand upon the cyber punk theme more. The cybernetic eyes being able to view ghosts is a beautifully done natural extension of the urban legends of photographs being able to capture ghosts (like in Fatal Frame), but it's a little diminished here as many characters are able to see ghosts without such cybernetic enhancements. Perhaps add more functionality to the cyberpunk feel, more lenses that let you see ghosts or the trails of ghosts, something more integral.
I enjoyed the game, thank you for not buckling under pressure to censor the game. Looking forward to more.
I saw that ghost too, she was beautiful like a goddess and with pink hair, but I have no idea who she could be. Most random ghosts you see are cursed ghosts of the dead. This woman seemed like some half divine priestess or goddess. But yeah, she had pink hair like Mei's sister, but I don't think the ghost was the sister.
NG++ has an additional image sequence at the very end that tells you what happened to Mei and where she is going, though it is somewhat vague
Also I’m curious about Mei’s connection to the apartment complex, that she was the only one who could purify it. Are she and Maiko the descendants of someone connected to it?
The PDA I’m also assuming was used to bring Mei there as it had the same message that Mei’s did, so someone, most likely Fei-Fei as it was found in her room, was “Mei’s date” in order to bring her there. (Though how it got there and why Fei-Fei would want to Purify Herself are the million dollar questions)
Really like the groundwork this laid out, and am looking forward to more.
It was kind of complex because there were like 4 parties each with their own goals, culminating at the party.
1) Father Yip wants to disband his White Tiger clan, announcing it at the reception.
2) Brian Mak wants to kill the White Tiger clan at the reception. Seems he was only pretending to love Father Yip's daughter the entire time, and Fei Fei knew & supported his plan to kill everyone (but she expected to live, as evidence by her single ticket to Hong Kong inside her packed briefcase).
3) Fei Fei was planning on using Brian Mak to cause this massacre, and with Hwang Wah Guong, she was going to change Brian Mak to a Jiangshi who was loyal to her.
4) Hwang Wah Guong, with the help of the good exorcist priest family (Lou Fu Hung & Ng Siu Fong), were going to excorcise all the evil that was concentrated in Fei Fei. Secretly he was going to betray everyone, and take all of Fei Fei's dark power for himself, however it seems as if he failed because Fei Fei remained with more dark power than he did.
What is confusing is that the party in 4) were purposefully not going to be at the reception, but in Fei Fei's room in 606 to do their rituals there. It seems however they were somehow in the 7th floor reception room during the party and were killed there, and Fei Fei absorbed everyone's power (how else could she have become even more powerful).
Mei Mak and her sister do seem to have a connection to the apartment, but it isn't cleared up exactly what it is. Brian Mak seems to obviously be related to them in some way. One of the audio tapes seems to have either mentioned Mei or sounded like somebody familiar (get the audio tape from leasing office desk, play it in salon). This audio is played in Japanese, which I don't know, and it's untranslated so I have no idea what it says. There seems to be more to the story than is explained. The backstory chapter about Mei's ancestor in Japan in the 1970's seems to have always been part of the story, but we only got that chapter because it was successfully funded on the kickstarter, so I think there's more backstory than is let on.
The PDA I have no real clue about, but everybody says it must've been Fei Fei who was posing as Mei's date and enticed her to come to the building. I have no idea how, the PDA was caked in dust as if it was untouched (maybe her ghost fingers somehow used the PDA without physically touching it).
That's the best I can tell. Unless you know somebody who can translate that tape, I don't know what else we can squeeze from the story
So what I'm assuming from this clarification of information:
1. Father Yip, being a Triad Gang leader wanted to disband the Triads because there was really no point to having them anymore. He was going to announce this at his daughter's engagement party because all the other Big Players in the gang were going to be there.
2. Considering killing everyone was his plan, then we can probably assume Brian was either a deranged individual ALSO touched by the spirits, or he was the member of an enemy gang, and blasting everyone one by one would just be really inefficient.
3. So they were basically playing each other, with them using each other to get what they wanted, but not realizing that they were (Unless Brian also realized he was being played). Brian just struck first.
4. Okay yeah that was pretty unclear. I know Hwang Wah Guong was doing some ritual in 606 during the party and that the good priests weren't there because Suk-Yi was with Lamp Post and his Girlfriend.
The PDA also looks to be the same model as Mei's, which if I remember, is a prototype which adds yet another mystery to the mix.
The fact that his last name is Mak adds another REALLY interesting factor to the matter as well. Mei and Maiko could possibly be descended from him? Possibly plead insanity (Screaming about ghosts and Jiangshi would do that)/somehow got parole and led a quiet life, eventually having children. Considering Yotsuya is in the 70's, the protagonist could very easily marry following immigration + Supernatural Experiences. The tape could have been recorded by a customer/prospective tenant? That wouldn't explain why it was in the Super's desk, but whatever.
Thank you for answering by the way, I very much enjoy theorizing and discussing things like this.
1. Makes sense, if I were disbanding a gang, I would want my rivals to disband as well. It makes sense.
2. Yeah, I figured Rival Triad made the most sense, and he just took the best opportunity he could to rid himself of those rivals, which was to gather them all in a room together. Also, which number was his apartment?
3. Fei-Fei wanted rid of her father, Brian also wanted rid of her father. Hwang wanted to achieve godhood by using the spirits Fei-Fei heard. Brian was using Fei-Fei to get close to Father Yip so he could do his job. Fei-Fei just expected she wouldn't be caught up in his plan. Hwang also intended to cause something to happen at the party utilizing Fei-Fei and the spirits she heard, I just don't think he expected to get blasted either.
4. Yeah, I understood that. Hwang was working against the Sifus, and, I believe, was the great source of negative energy that the Sifus master warned about.
Doy, I don't know why I didn't realize 503 was his room by process of elimination and the clues. Sorry I'm a moron.
And yeah, I thought that he was summoning stronger, more malevolent spirits than the Sifus were, which Fei-Fei was then hearing because of her vulnerable and weakened state of mind, which caused her to be more vulnerable to listen to them.
We'll probably learn more about the PDA in the next entry or an update or something.
well I noticed the 204 detail about their being anti-theism laws in mei's time that by itself has some unsettling implications, add in the fact that there really are things that go bump in the night and those unsettling implications become terrifying. I wonder how far such laws have spread or if it's just a national thing (not offended dark future and all just curious).
Really curious about the third world war and the political changes that caused definitely a lot of potential material there.
I mean, I think what can be implied in that Seattle is now Neo-Hong Kong, that the US and China were enemies in the war, and old Hong Kong got nuked or otherwise destroyed, and then Seattle (and perhaps other locations on the West Coast) was ceded to them, or perhaps established as a place for refugees to live. Would also explain the anti-theism laws except for Buddha considering the stances the Chinese Government have taken in the past.
