chromebook retroarch loads fine but cannot navigate to my roms folder

I have tried enabling hidden files etc, clicking browse to local folder from the steam client ...nothing works. tried putting them in downloads also...
It seems running steam in a VM on a chromebook is fine when insgtalling contect via steam but importing roms on a chromebook appears impossible.
Anyone solved this issue?
