RetroArch

RetroArch

What is the point?
First of all i wanna apologize for the rude sounding title. What are the advantages/point of using this and installing cores over simply downloading the emulators for specific consoles?

I like it cause it's nice to have all of them in one spot. Yea you can add each one to steam as a non steam game. But to me i see it as a bit of a hassle if i want to play a game on another system i would have to close one out and bring up another. But this is my opinion and everyone will have a different one.

The convenience of having every emulator in one place and Steam Cloud saving.

Just a few brief reasons but I'm missing many, many more.
Infinite customisations with overlays, shaders and more you can design and save for every game or core.
I's a sort of all in one frontend for all your console and arcade systems.
Some ra's cores are much better than their standalone emulators.
Plus a dedicated forum, cloud, ss, artwork, guides, news, feed, reviews and more sections.
And finally no one forces you to use this in case you keep not seing the point so no matter what it's always a win-win.

The steam version BLOWS. Better off getting the direct software from their website. for some dumb ass reason, development for this version is behind that of the real version that is non-steam, that and everytime you uninstall it, it makes sure to delete all your settings, cores, etc. its RETARDED.

Go get it from the website and if you want, just add a quick shortcut through steam to access that instead. I've had nothing but problems with the steam version and never did prior to that version, ever.

RetroaArch on Steam has automatic updates. The standalone version does not. I prefer to use RetroArch over MAME because some features are easier to use, such as shaders and overlays. In MAME I could never figure out how to enable shaders, or make my own custom bezels from scratch. I figured both out for RetroArch without too much difficulty. I also like to have a unified launcher, namely, Steam. For me, now that DOSBox Pure is available on Steam, I have no need to incorporate anything from standalone RetroArch.

But on MAME the cheats for arcade games work better than in RetroArch, so I have sacrificed that.

The main reason is because I like having Steam Cloud saves for my save states. I can play on my PC and pick up on my Deck and vice versa. I also like accessing multiple emulators and playlists in one interface. The standalone version of Retroarch has more cores available to download through its online updater, but the cool thing is that you can just copy those cores from the standalone Retroarch folder to the steam one, which is what I do. That way, I get the best of both worlds.
I just find it easier to manage and play once you get the basics done. Besides I love the customization in it
Having everything in one place.
Screenshots and geeky ♥♥♥♥ like playtime on Steam.

I love RA on Steam.

I'm finding that customizing RetroArch on Steam is like a game itself.
I always have issues with retroarch configuration.

I tend to find the games run much smoother on individual emulators i.e ppsspp, melon and pcsx2.

That's because indeed some emulators are better or up to date in comparison with ra's cores. They are not the same,

the steam version is annoying but it's the easiest way to access roms/saves over network while using a raspberry pi as a steamlink for my living room tv

For me, it is a matter of convenience. It’s all in one place and organized.
It is very simple: Cloud Saves

I can change from Steam Deck to Desktop (and vice versa) and the Saves are always up-to-date.
