Missing Gamecube cores?
Hi all, I just started getting serious about emulation since I got some retro controllers for Christmas. I wanted to test one of them out with Gamecube games (all ones I own on the original system, by the way) but I can't find any Gamecube cores. It seems to be supported since the Gamecube ROMs show up without any issue and even add to a playlist when I try to import them, but the only cores that are suggested when I try to play them are for completely different consoles.

Am I missing something here? RetroArch does support Gamecube, doesn't it?

GC and Wii's cores are Dolphin.
Now RA's dolphin is different from standalone dolphin. The first one is outdated, experimental and buggy.
So you should use the standalone instead.
Nonetheless if you still want to struggle with RA's core you can add it manually.

Hmm thanks for the info.

Man, that really sucks. I hate having to have a billion different emulators installed, that's the whole reason RetroArch appeals so much. It just seems like I always end up having to switch over to different ones for one reason or another (such as having to switch Genesis emulators, since my Retro-Bit Genesis controller doesn't work well with it).

Either way, I appreciate the tip.

It supports it, but it's absent from Steam and will probably never show up here. Standalone Retroarch supports every core up to the Wii. Here are your options.

1. You either use the standalone version.

2. Download the standalone version and copy all of it's contents to the Steam folder, effectively converting it to the Standalone version while enjoying the benefits of Steam Cloud.

3. Go to their repository here: https://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/windows/x86_64/latest/
Download cores and place them in the Cores folder on your steam installation.

You can still add the standalone emulator as a non steam game so you'll have them almost in the same place. I believe there are even some community emu organisers but I have no much idea about it.

Btw RA's core for Genesis AFAIR is also the same for MS, GG and I believe SEGA CD too.

That's what I always do and recommend but sometimes some ignorants and narrow minded people accuse it of a "dirty hack" LOL while it's literally to restore the original soft's functions. Hack is what they want with a magical solution.

I'll try to look into copying the contents to the Steam folder, as I like having the Steam version due to the hour tracking.

Well, the main reason I use the Steam version of RetroArch is simply because I like having it tracking my hours to an online account. I tried suggesting Steam enable hour tracking for non-Steam games but got a rabid mob of "interesting individuals" flipping out over me having the audacity to suggest such a thing.

But I digress, I have Mednafen set up as a non-Steam game and that's how I play my Sega games for now since it works really well with that aforementioned Genesis controller. I just wish that RetroArch supported everything without any major tweaks, since it's the only major emulator I know of which is actually on the Steam store.

I know. They are very special...

To be fair RA is not an emulator. It's just a frontend that hosts tons of emulators. Beetle Saturn OTOH is and a good one.

Haha true, but I just mean that I like having everything launch from one spot and also give me hour tracking attached to my Steam account. I can theoretically pop different emulators into Playnite and track hours that way but it's not backed up via cloud or a gaming account, so I'd have to regularly make note of my hour count if I wanted it to be backed up.

RetroArch is really good but it's really bad all at the same time. I don't understand why the heck I can't tweak the core options without loading the content, why can't I map more than one key for hotkeys and no key combination, I would rather have CTRL+R for Restart than just R for example. And it does not explain if something is missing (e.g. some BIOS files for specific core) and where to put them.

I really love that RetroArch allows me to play Super Game Boy ehanced games in full screen and without border through bsnes core which I couldn't set up in standalone emulator but I can't stand why the controller mappings should be override with keymap fles everytime and I still can't figure out how to enable Sega Mouse via genesis plus gx core.

RetroArch interface and set up tweaks are not intuitive for me.

Bios go on System folder. You can know if one or several files are missing once a game is loaded and:

For MD Mouse once the game loaded:

I thought that at first and was frustrating and irritating to me to the point that I avoided it and sticked to standalones but as I use steam a lot I gave it more tries and it's pretty familiar to me now. Once you are used everything becomes easier. Still don't know many of its great features.

Port 1 = MD Mouse and Port 2 = MD Mouse - no luck. Tried Cannon Fodder 1 game which works with mouse controls on Kega Fusion emulator set on Port 2.

From what I've read it should work on P2 while P1 is normal pad but you are right I tried Marble Madness with MD Mouse and no luck either. Will check later with more time.
