Where is MAME 2003 and other emulators
kinda getting frustrated with this version of retroarch.... the non steam version has sooooo many better features but i like the connectivity of steam and thus i am in a conundrum... im not finding emulators for certain systems (MAME) and theres no easy way to update the Rom files..... why cant they just make the official release the one steam distributes....not this archaic version that has half the features

The most similar is final burn but it has a much less compatibility than mame.
NOW here (MAME current) it is too:
The "easy way" to get it is to copypaste standalone RA over steam's and you get the updater then you get mame (current which is the best version). This way you'll have the aforementioned "non steam version" with all the stuff.

The "hard way" is to add it manually:

Worked like a charm...not that hard to do so either.... Manually insert missing .dll files into cores and Leave the new ones and update the info files by putting the missing ones in there. piece of cake. thanks for the assist

How did you know which .dll files were missing, or do you just copy all if them over ?

As I've replied on yout thread. That is not an existing core supported by RA. Nevertheless try adding the emulator as a non steam game.

I don't really think the non Steam version is actually superior. The Steam one works very well, with very little input latency (if you set the options right), and with very few extra problems in comparison. Only in Linux it may be worth to get it outside Steam sometimes... some occasional bugs or freezes can happen... but I use that OS, and still prefer the Steam version because its kept more up to date than the distro versions.

Personalĺy, I've never been a fan of MAME... its really badly optimized for many drivers/emulated machines, and speed is really inconsistent... that is to say, for some games its fair, but for others, it sucks. Not surprising, because MAME usually gets the first emulated implementation for emulated hardware/drivers. In other words, MAME actually exists for the coders, allowing them to use the existing MAME code to quickly add and test new drivers, without having to write a full emulator. On the other hand, the slow speed of MAME doesn't mean its any better or more accurate than the others. Just sloppy coding, in my honest opinion.

If you are talking about RA the steam version is a limited one.
If you are talking about MAME cores it's the same for both.

Its not limited. The full list of cores can't be downloaded from within Steam, but you could still add them manually. That's the only "problem" it has, if we can even consider that a problem. I feel it is better to have just one core installed for every system you want to emulate, so that the game can be started right away by Retroarch, instead of having to bother with selecting a core/emu among many, by yourself.

Yes, it's limited because it doesn't have all the same functions than the standalone.
NOW, yes you can get all the cores manually or replacing standalone over it but still it does not change the previous.
And no, it's not the "only problem" it also differs on the lack of being able to easily update all the stuff like cheats, thumbnails, cores, controller files, etc, etc, etc.
You can "feel" that's better and that's fine but objectively it's not.
What it's true is that steam version has an exclusive and nice feature which is the "show status" so your friends can see what core and game are you playing.
