How TF do you use classic style cheat codes on Genesis plus GX?

Iv been smashing my head against the wall for 2 hours now and I can't for the life of me get it to work. I input my code, Enable code, Apply code changes, Restart and NOTHING. Its like I don't even have a code enabled. Iv tried several codes and none of them work its as I said acting like i'm not even using a code.

I'm just trying to mess about with sonic 3 and knuckles and nothings working. I checked around and had the action replay and game genie binarys installed but they still fail to work and I can't find any help online as every source is either a tutorial that doesn't seam to work or a recommendation to try something else.

Nah I mean when I put in a game genie or gameshark or action replay code the game behaves as if I put in no code. Im puting in the codes the old way like how you would do on original hardware though retroarch but its just not working.

What I do is

Cheats are now .cht files. That you place in the cheats folder and the file has to be named the same as the game. They still use the gameshark/action replay codes you just have to them a different way now and not reply on the gameshark/action replay roms. Also the cheats are region specific so usa codes will not work on a europe game and vice versa.

Here lets take the cheat file for the game you wanted it for.

The following game uses game genie codes.

Make a new text file and name it Sonic _ Knuckles + Sonic The Hedgehog 3 (USA).cht
Make sure it don't have .txt when you are saving it change it to .cht.
Put it in here Steam\steamapps\common\RetroArch\cheats\Genesis Plus GX
Then in the quick menu then scroll down to cheats then add cheats replace then to genesis plus gx then click on the cheat. It will load and then you can scroll through all the cheats and usng your keyboard arrow keys you can use left or right arrow keys to turn the cheats on or off. Then scroll back up and click on apply cheats.

Let's take the first one and break it down.

Always start out with 0. So cheat0_desc
Observe the space before and after the = sign.
Follow the same format but change desc to code and enable where need be.
If it is a single line code like A4MT-AA5J if it is a single code then put the code as it is inside quotes "A4MT-AA5J".

If there is more then one code then you do it like in the example.
"A2PA-CA6R+A3JT-CA9Y" Add a + symbol in between each code set with no spaces. Make sure to put it all in quotes also.

I use this site for all my game genie codes and had a lot of success with their codes.
