RetroArch

Doom on PrBoom
Years ago, before Steam had working copies of the classic Doom games, I used GZDoom. I finished Doom and started Doom II. I then discovered RetroArch and learned how to use shaders. I could not get shaders to work on GZDoom and then I got stuck on a level in Doom II and gave up. I've really liked using RetroArch and I was curious about PrBoom. I read that jumping and crouching could break levels. I read that you could not jump or crouch using PrBoom, but I also read that there was no freelook, which I really liked about GZDoom. Since I've been becoming more familiar with RetroArch I decided to give classic Doom on RetroArch a try!

Although the integration with RetroArch, at least on Steam, is buggy, there are some really awesome features:
-Freelook can be enabled in-game. I was pleasantly surprised to discover this because everything that I read was to the contrary.
-Rumble can be enabled using the RetroArch UI and it is awesome! It is difficult to enable rumble in GZDoom.
-Native cheats can be easily enabled using the RetroArch UI without typing codes.
-Shaders and overlays work flawlessly using the RetroArch UI. These are difficult to enable in GZDoom.
-Perfomance is great at high resolution.
-Music files are easily replaced.

Unfortunately, I have experienced some minor bugs and deficiencies.
-Saves using the RetroArch UI are unstable. Fortunately, saves made in-game are stable, but the keyboard does not work so saves cannot be named, even if game focus mode is enabled and even if the keyboard toggle function is on.
-I have not been able to figure out how to stack multiple mods, though single mods work.
-Some of my simple mods that worked for GZDoom are incompatible with PrBoom.
-I tried to make a one line edit to a .wad using Slade and the mod would not work.
-In order to turn off a cheat, RetroArch has to be restarted.
-PrBoom does not support rewind.
-PrBoom does not support the ability to find and create new cheat codes or rumble codes.
-Finally, development for PrBoom ceased long ago.

For me, freelook, shaders, overlays, rumble, and native cheats outweigh all of the negatives. I highly recommend classic Doom on RetroArch. The PrBoom core, .info files, and cheat files have to be obtained from standalone RetroArch. Have fun, everyone!
