Is there a way to clean up the names and retain the boxart?

I just want the names with no region or rev number etc in the playlists but that stuff is needed for box art. Is there a way to do this or no?

I always do this "extra work".
You can rename in emulator munus, or from playlist file. Then rename cover image file if you need.

For eg. files:
"Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL).cue"
"Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL).bin"

Renaming from "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL)" to "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis":
1. In emulator menus "PlayStation>Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL)>Rename".
2. Or better rename from RetroArch playlist files "...\RetroArch\playlists\"

Open "Sony - PlayStation.lpl" with text editor and find your game.
Change:

      "label": "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL)",

to

      "label": "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis",

Now for cover image, located in "...\RetroArch\thumbnails\Sony - PlayStation\Named_Boxarts\Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL).png".
But thanks to new RetroArch version, now cover image shown:
1. By game file name (Rom name) - "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL).cue", so cover is "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis (PAL).png".
2. If cover not found by game file name (Rom name), cover image shown by playlist name - "Resident Evil 3 - Nemesis.png".

Go to
settings > playlist > manage playlist (select desired playlist/console)
'Label display Method' change to () & []

It should remove prefix within () & []
