New Guy Needs Help using RetroArch with DS Pokemon Games on his Steam Deck! Help!

Hey fellow gamers. So I recently got a Steam Deck and I'm still learning how to use it. I downloaded a Rom on it for Pokemon Soul Silver and I want to use cheats on it through RetroArch. However, none of the codes work! This is the process I do so you can help me see what I'm doing wrong and help me correct it.

1) I installed the US version of the Rom for Pokemon Soul Silver named "4788 (if that makes a difference)."
2) The Core I'm using is MelonDS. I've also done this process with cores DeSmuME 2015 and DeSmuME. None of them have worked so far.
3) Once I've chosen Soul Silver to play, then I press both joysticks down to enter into RetroArch.
4) I go to cheats, load cheat file, I select Nintendo DS, then I select the cheat codes for "Pokemon - SoulSilver Version (USA).cht"
5) Last but not least I pick the cheats I want to use, press the "apply changes" button, and then start the game.
Unfortunately the codes never work. What am I doing wrong? I've been at this for weeks and STILL no dice. I'm a just a new guy seeking help. I've watched videos, searched the internet for days and still can't get the cheats to work. Someone PLEASE help me get this to work!

I wish I could say I had a solution but sadly I have the exact same problem, except I’m using retroarch and melonDS on my PC to play HeartGold, but cannot get a single cheat to work. I’ll get the cheats, put them in the right directory, retroarch finds them, I enable them, but absolutely nothing happens. Hopefully someone gives an answer soon.

Make sure you are using the right cheat file. I have also noticed that some cores for the same system will not allow the use of cheats either they are blocked or don't have support for them. Try another core if possible.
