Mame "current" missing?
On my old laptop, I used the RetroArch-Win64 version to download all the Mame cores, including one that was called, "Mame current". On my new laptop, for some reason, when I try to download the Mame cores using RetroArch-Win64, there is no "Mame current". Is there a way to get this "Mame current" core at this time?

Easiest way: get RA's folder from their site. Unzip it and replace everything over steam's. You'll get the updater and hence will be able to get mame current.
The online updater is part of the standalone RetroArch version and for some reason it is not showing MAME current. I will see if I can find the folder from their website like you suggested.

The reason is it's against valve's rules and they won't allow it. That's why you have dlc with several cores but not all of them.
I gave you the easiest and most complete way.
If that wasn't good enough for you here you are the only other way:

What I mean is that when I first used the online updater months ago on the standalone version to obtain additional cores to transfer to the Steam version, at that time, MAME current was obtained from the online updater. I then transferred MAME current to the Steam version. For some reason, when I use the online updater with the standalone version on my new gaming laptop, MAME current is no longer obtained from the online updater.

Maybe because and as the second guide shows you not only need the core but the info file too.
My first reply included everything.
The info files appear when the core is downloaded. I was able to transfer the mame current core and info files the first time, but the second time there was no mame current core and there were no info files that downloaded.

it's now called: Arcade (Mame) or just: Mame

Strangely the functionality is different, perhaps because of an update. I have one game that is playable only with the old MAME current and that is broken by the new MAME. Shucks. Thanks for resolving the query.

the screen is rotated now by default, turn on game focus mode and press tab to enter mame options and under video rotate the screen 90 deg.

Thanks. I'm having problems with the game refusing to even launch with the new MAME core.
I resolved the issue of functionality. I was placing the BIOS folders in the system folder. For the game that I was playing, the BIOS folders must be placed in the same folder as the ROM! Now, the new MAME core works just fine!

The old MAME-current and new MAME cores have filenames that are identical: mame_libretro.dll and mame_libretro.info. They appear as MAME-current or MAME in the RetroArch UI despite the identical names.

So far the game launches with the correct orientation.
