ABXY buttons reversed in RetroArch controls
Today I looked carefully at the RetroArch controls and for some reason, on the left column, the A and B buttons are swapped and are assigned to B and A respectively on the right column, and the X and Y buttons are swapped on the left column and are assigned to Y and X respectively on the right column. Why do the controls appear like this?

Try this:
Main menu:point_right:settings:point_right:entry:point_right:menu controls:point_right:menu:change confirm/cancel buttons
tell me if that helped you.
Also which core are you playing? In Japan they tend to use (switch style) A as confirm and B to cancell while occident and PS does the opposite.

Thanks. I did see that before, and tried it, but that apparently is only for the menu and doesn't affect the game's controls. I'm using DOSBoxPure and FinalBurnNeo.

Thank you, I'll take a look at it. I wanted to also say that the controls work fine, with the A button working on the actual gamepad like it's supposed to work, it's just strange that the mapping is inconsistent with what is shown on RetroArch.

It's confusing because you don't bind your controller to RetroArch, you bind your controller to 1 of 5 retropads located at: "Settings > Input > Port 1 - 5 Controls" and then save a controller profile. If a game or system has a unique controller, play the game, press F1 and navigate to: "Quick Menu > Controls > Port 1 - 5 Controls" where you can remap the retropad. (not your controller) Save a remap file for each game or system that needs a custom map.

The UI for RetroArch is juuuuuuuust a tad confusing.

I've been aware of the method explained in the video, thanks. I figured it out. When you access the controls through the global settings, the ABXY mappings on the left column are inexplicably reversed:

However, when you access the controls after launching the game and invoking the quick menu, the ABXY mappings on the left column are properly assigned:

This inconsistency has no purpose but to confuse the user.

Definitely this happens to you because you have so many controllers I think.
Tempest Sep 7, 2023 @ 12:27am
I tested this with two different controllers, and the same thing happened. Actually if you watch the video that you posted, at 0:35 and 1:11 the same thing happens.

The two screenshots are not used for the same things the first is used to bind mouse, keyboard and controller to the RetroPad and the second is used to remap the RetroPad to the system.

in first screenshot:
RetroPad on left ---- mouse, keyboard and controller on right

in second screenshot:
RetroPad w bindings from first screen on left ---- System controls on right

Why does the retropad in the first screenshot have the ABXY in the odd positions?
Fried Brains Sep 7, 2023 @ 11:51am
Not sure, what is odd about it? Do you mean why is it labeled different than an Xbox controller? It is a RetroPad and not a XBox controller, use the icon instead of the label to figure out which button it's referring to.

A should be in the down position, B right, X left, Y up. For some reason in the first screenshot these are switched. In the second screenshot, these are correctly positioned.

A RetroPad has an ABXY layout like a SNES gamepad

I guess I'm not familiar with that system. Is there a reason they default to that system?
