Many Cores are not sufficiently updated to Steam's standards and should be used with caution. To add these cores you need three things, for example:

Core file - //RetroArch/cores/pcsx2_libretro.so
Info File - //RetroArch/cores/pcsx2_libretro.info
System File - //RetroArch/system/PCSX2/bios/'your PS2 bios here'

Core files and info files can be found here: https://buildbot.libretro.com/
For example, the latest nightly build Linux cores are at:
https://buildbot.libretro.com/nightly/linux/x86_64/latest/
info files are at: https://buildbot.libretro.com/assets/frontend/info.zip

To add PCSX2 core, extract pcsx2_libretro.so.zip and info.zip to your 'cores' folder. Then add a new folder to the 'RetroArch/system' folder named 'PCSX2', inside PCSX2 add a new folder named 'bios' and copy your PS2 bios to your new bios folder.

thanks! retroarch was able to locate the core, but upon starting it either crashes retroarch or says it couldn't load the content. ah well.
