RetroArch
Huge pain to delete save states within retroarch on steam.
Using steam cloud with retroarch is an unbelievable pain simply going into the folder and deleting the save states from the file system will result in steam just redownloading them. This results in the 700 megabytes being used up rather quickly. Is there some way we can get a save deleter within retroarch itself to avoid this issue?

Never heard about this but maybe going to save folder, delete what you want and empty the :spacetrash:¿?

steam redownloads save states if you delete them upon relaunching the game. So after you're done playing through a game you can never delete those saves. Needless to say retroarc builds these saves up quickly
Delete them while RetroArch is running?
Yup, having a similar issue myself. I hit the 1,000 cap for number of files on Steam Cloud and now things won't upload. Seems like the same process Tabletop Simulator went through. They first raised their Cloud storage to 93Gb and 10,000 files, and then they added a Cloud Manager to the program that's able to remove things. Not sure Retroarch has the resources to develop a Cloud Manager for the program but it would be nice if they could raise the cap at least.

I've tried deleting them while it's running. It will simply redownload the file after exiting and reopening the game in order to effectively wipe a cloud save you need to remake the save file which doesn't help us here. Retro arch supports about 700 megabytes cloud storage and when you have say states that can use upwards of 10 megabytes.

if you frequently play retro games and build up a library you can see how we would eventually run into problems. After you finished the game and you're done with it and you have two or three saves dates there's no way to delete those while still using cloud storage

Well the hard limit for retroarc is 700 megabytes of which is very little sense we're juggling so many games. There are ways to wipe out your entire save library on steam cloud but something like this isn't exactly desirable.

There might be a way to delete certain files while you delete configuration files while retaining your current settings but I'm not exactly sure what the process would be for retroarch. At present seems like the best option is just to disable steam cloud and not use it.

However since the developers applied to have steam cloud for retroarc they should at least provide us tools to manage those files. At present you just have 700 megabytes and it fills up and that's about all you can do.

I agree with having the ability to manage the files on steam cloud.

I would hope that Valve would allow us to manually delete files along side the ability to already download them.

If Valve had an interface to interact with the files both locally and online in the games properties, I think would be a great way to do it for all games.
Normally Steam cloud copy how things are after app close.

1. Run retro.
2. Delete save states you want gone.
3. Close retro, and it automatically cloud sync.

Save states should be gone, both device, and cloud.

that doesn't work. After you do this retro arch will simply redownload the save states upon launching it a second time

I test this out in a bit, and see if I can help you out.
-edit-

So I gave quick test with 3 random games for PS1, made 3 states for each, I made sure it showed up in my cloud save.

After that, I went ahead launch retro arch, alt + tab, went to delete the save states that is found in Steamspps > common > RetroArch > States, after I done that, I shutdown retro arch, and steam sync, and check the cloud save by refreshing the page, and they're gone.

Try deleting the files then launch retroarch from the folder not steam then closes then open via steam.

this method seems to work as a workaround. You do need to shut down steam after closing retroarc however. If you don't it will redownload the files that it sees are missing

I tried this method as well, and it worked for me without having to restart Steam.
Turn off Steam cloud, Delete the save states, turn open up Retroarch and turn it back on if you want, in addition you can also turn off Steam cloud for Retroarch itself

If just want to rid of said save file from cloud just do this super easy. Just make sure Steam cloud enable.

1. Launch game/software.
2. Alt + tap out of game/software.
3. Go to where save file located, and delete said save file.
4. Force close game/software without saving. Wait for Steam cloud update, and done it gone from your steam cloud that simple.
