A compromised version?
I'm a long time Retroarch user, and as I personally don't like big picture mode, so I don't think I really would use this version at all. For what I read this version had stripped the posibility to download cores from the main interface, so its a less friendly, what is the opposite reason to had it on Steam. So why?

I'ḿ just guessing here but I think Valve put a "light" version online to avoid any IP legal battle about emulating other platforms? Is that the reason?

You pretty much summed it up already, you can install additional cores manually though. Also it's convenient for Steam remote play

parsec is good but remote play is better now imo

I cannot disagree more. Rpt is a bad and subpar copy of parsec. Will just summarise it by saying rpt is mainly limited to steam plus guest player has to eat black screens while waiting.
Parsec works better, guest can literally be with you virtually and you can play whatever you have on your PC even watch movies and is faster than rpt. I tested both with friends and the differences are huge.

Valve requested us not to have the Core Downloader as per their Terms of Service, so we did. Instead, cores will be supplied as free DLC. There are only 10 right now but we are aiming at adding more soon.

Will you eventually add all the available cores or just some?

Nice to have a Steam version for when the Steam Deck comes out.

I think it's understandable for Valve to go the safest way! Thanks for the answer and all the hard work guys!!!

What does Big Picture mode have to do with it? I don't like Big Picture mode either, and I don't use it. Am I missing some RetroArch feature because of that?
