Fishing Sucks!
I am so frustrated with this stupid quest. So I am doing the Fisherman's Gambit quest. I need to get 10 sardines. This also needed for another quest that I am doing.

I go to fisherman port and one side where you need to go through a little cave opening that opens up to the other side of the beach, is where I got the shaman. For some reason I can catch all the shaman in the world without problems, yet when I go to the other side in hopes to pick up sardines. The mechanics are totally broken or something? I lay my line I wait for the lure to bop down and I pull back( I am using a controller), now if the fish goes right, I need to pull left on left analog stick. If it goes right, I need to pull left. If it's in front of me I need to pull back. Simple right. Yet for whatever frigging reason. The fish just keeps getting a away.

Yet when I go back to the side where I can get the shaman, I can get like dozens. If there a mechanic that basically makes it impossible to catch anything and I need to come back or something, I don't want to spend a year trying to catch sardines.

What does that even mean? Are you a teenager in kindergarden? If you are not going to help don't reply. Thanks

Feel for the vibration. If it’s a weak vibration your analog stick is in the wrong spot.

I got it, apparently I was using the wrong lure. Now I am catching them. I was just using the regular lure. But thanks. Not sure if the old fisherman told me to get a special lure.

1. Every fish (especially the hard ones) needs different lures -- Different lures have different probability of getting the fish you want.
And, if I remember correctly, some bigger fish requires you getting failed for a certain times before you can get a chance to catch it (with appropriate lure).

2. The fishing system is not quite consistent in regards to patterns. At one point the game gave you a hint, "pay attention to the pattern of how fish moves and bites" (Sorry this is not the original word. I played Japanese version).
There are some fish types that are even different from the common ones. For these types, the lure does not sink. Instead, you need to feel how strong the vibration your controller gives to you for the first touch, then decide whether you want to pull the string or not (strong vibration needs to pull, weak one doesn't)

(I guess keyboard/mouse players need to check how low the fish nod was pulled, as they don't have vibration).

Bottom line, yes this fishing system is sometimes frustrating. But for this type of games you really need to be patient. This is not like most of the modern games that you can get quick feedback -- This is a Japanese game after all, which this frustrating part links back to the old days.

(And just a side note, for the meaning of 2010 game journalist reply, the original 2010 PS3 version of NieR was commented by the [western] game journalists at that time "Unoriginal"
It's basically kinda like a meme for us who like NieR & DOD series nowadays)

Also dont forget the "journalist" who could not find the right beach to fish for the Shaman Fish and gave up playing the game because of that. Oh and then gave the game a 0/10 declaring it a gamebreaking bug.
Yup, really.
And people say games journalism only nowadays is a joke...

Fishing in this game is a rage inducer for sure - but its stupidly simple at the same time - just takes a bit of patience and trial and error.

The fishing itself was cool, I was just wondering how the hell I went to the wrong beach...

was it not marked in the OG? like seriously how the hell did I miss that rofl.

They don't mark fishing spots - other than text hints - which is kind of a pain if you forgot.

Prob intentional lol

Not quite, keep an eye on the vibrations, the colour of the fish's 'stamina' bar or whatever you'd call it, and how its moving.

It is explained pretty poorly, but imagine the centre of your analog stick is your character, you want to put the actual analog stick opposite the fish from your character. It doesn't care what way the fish is moving, and pushing directly left or right is often too far (unless the fish is as far as it can possibly move)

You are basically just trying to pull the fish straight towards your character, not like some other games where you resist their movement.

So in short, you usually are just pulling straight back, or backwards to the right/backwards to the left.

On gamepad you can also just make sure you move the analog stick toward the strongest vibration.
I pulled most fish in without even looking at the screen.
