Go for atmosphere and a journey - not for super accurate plot.

I'm not American, but space socialism/forced conformism aren't an improvement. Just sounds like the Devs have some personal politics they want to peddle, and do so hard. Supposedly "becoming able to photosynthyze" among other things being a thing. Which is incredibly nonsensical.

And that is why I would never choose that ending. After all the trials and tribulations, allowing humanity to be assimilated, is not a positive ending. Go for the other ending.

DOLOS protocol is the one forcing you down the path of assimilating into the space elves, not the devs. The whole subplot of the game is about how the different factions of humanity each have different ideas about how humans should survive post-earth. The Ashtangites ideology involves ecological harmony and changing humanity to suit the planet, which comes from the corporation that launched their expedition. (DOLOS's allies in the beginning that provide food, iirc).

It's also not your only option. Romulus is the real ending imo

This a a good game based around an average sci fi story. I read pretty much only Sci Fi. The developers are game makers and not writers of fiction. Just enjoy the game for what it is. I have completed it twice and found it quite difficult at times but got there in the end. I never felt that the developers were pushing their personal politics on me more just trying to set the scene for you to be interested in progressing the game. In my opinion of course.

A) Your long-dead capitalist, authoritarian overlord had decreed that you must become space elves with no way to defend yourselves, and is using propaganda/brainwashing/fake news to leave you no other option. (p.s. it gets worse)

or

B) You pull the plug on the fake news that is manipulating you, and take your chances on an uncertain future, where your choices are your own. {p.s. the guy who was lying to you all along says this is a bad idea}

I think the message in the game deserves spreading.
That is, that the U.N. is 1 big enough disaster away from becoming an authoritarian cameralistic regime that is no less incompetent as they were before. That ecosocialism only works in vacuum absent from alternatives and only after genetically modifying the population into beings that place no value into merit, common sense or free will. That the only way to save humanity for real is to get rid of anyone in a position of power that is infected with the ecosocialist agenda (ejecting Edden ending).
Oh and also that you should put a bullet in the head of anyone with a mustache that speaks while eating because for no apparent reason they might turn into an evil mustache twirling spaceship that eats people.

I'm not sure the game really says capitalism is bad. More like arrogant pychos with too much money are bad (Jeff Bez- I mean Elon Mu- uhhh... Vanir Dolos). The UN tries to make capitalism as the bad guy in this, but in turn are just as bad or worse psychos themselves turning people into slaves, so their word isn't exactly golden here.

Except, changing yourself into weird photosynthizing aliens (photosynthesis is not all that efficient or beneficial), who live in some absurd low tech zero individuality, zero progress, zero anything society is a quick way to extinction the first time any natural catastrophe rolls around they can't cope with or adapt to. It's even less adaptive or long term survivable than current human society. And has a 100% "best by" date.

The entire situation is a completely false and absurd binary, that requires you to not think about the implications and long term effect, at all.
