The MOST ANNOYING THING about persona 4 and 5:
*Leader dies*

Party members: OMG, OUR LEADER IS DEAD! ALL IS LOST!

Navigator: Um, don't you have a revive spell?

Party members: *ignores them* WE CAN'T GO ON! ITS OVER!

Navigator: I'm sure we bought some revival beads just before entering the dungeon...

Party members: I CAN'T BELIEVE ITS OVER!

Navigator: We can revive him! just use-*cut off by party members*

Party members: I CAN'T BELIEVE SEMPAI IS DEAD AND THERE'S NOTHING WE CAN DO ABOUT IT!!!

Navigator: OH MY FREAKING GOD, USE A-*cut off once again*

Party members: I CAN'T LIVE IN A WORLD WITHOUT SEMPAI! *kills themselves*

Navigator: *sighs and facepalms*

-----------

One of the most annoying and aggravating mechanics in recent persona games is the "leader dies=game over" mechanic before Golden, it was even worse, you didn't get a retry chance and you were screwed if you hadn't saved for 2-3 floors.

It's a thing that got grandfathered in from the rest of the SMT series. When your party is a bunch of demons, it makes sense for them to abandon you, they stand only to gain from your death. It just happens that while it still makes some sense in game design (the MC is the most powerful member of the team, therefore he should have some weakness to make up for it) it doesn't really make sense in universe

i agree on Persona 5 Royal, Joker die = game over

But Persona 4 Golden? NOPE, Rise is the best navi, later in the game she able to revive MC once per battle, Futaba? can't do it, but Futaba can revive party multiple times, but if i need to choose between Rise vs Futaba as Navi, i will vote Rise, revive MC once per battle is so precious.

Futaba was far more likeable though. Also how many times did you die in 4 and 5? I think I died maybe 4 or 5 times in my most recent playthrough of 4 and that was to main bosses so just restart floor and restart battle knowing their weaknesses already. Not sure how many times I've died in 5 but its not that many that Futaba not being able to revive me was a big deal.

It's definitely annoying, and this not being the case in a lot of the offshoot games (P5S for example) is always really nice. They could even force your party members to be on automatic instead of manual control, since you aren't there to lead them or something, but getting a total game over because of a single instance of light/dark instakill RNG always feels bad.

On the first floor of Rise's dungeon, you can find an item called "Patient Collar" in golden chest. It's the item version of "Endure". It will protect you from dying once per battle.

This is a staple in all of their games, I love "Digital Devil Saga". It doesnt take long to get used to the learning curb of "dont let the leader die" its not even a real issue, hate using this term, but its a total "skill issue" on your part.

Pretty much a SEGA JRPG staple mechanic nowadays, look at LAD 7 and LAD 8 Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, P4G and P5R. I personally like it.

The explanation I go with is that the MC puts everything he has into fighting and doesn't actually go down until he's dead. Mechanically speaking, I can understand how it might be frustrating but I think changing the feature might make the game a little too easy.
