Persona 4 Releases originally on the Playstation 2 in 2008 around the end of the Playstation 2's lifespan.
Persona 4 Golden Released on the Playstation Vita in 2012, during the tail-end of the PS3 and XB360 era of consoles.
Persona 4 Golden Released on PC / Windows Via Steam in June 2020, during the tail-end of the PS4 / XB1's Lifespan.
It's going to release for Playstation 4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One in 2023. That's shortly after the end of the Playstation 4 / XB1 Generation of consoles.
So that's around 4 Console Generations solely for Persona 4 Re-Releases.
Persona 3 had 3 main releases
Persona 3 on the Playstation 2, Persona 3 FES on the Playstation 2, and Persona 3 Portable on the Playstation Portable. P3 released in 2006, FES in 2007, Portable in 2009, pretty much all within the Playstation 2's lifespan and the early lifespan of the Playstation 3.
Persona 5 released on PS3 / PS4 in 2016, well into the PS4's lifespan, with Royal releasing in 2019 just on PS4. And P5R's going to re-release in October of 2022 for PC, Xbox and PS5. That's a total of 3 Re-Releases across 2 generations.
So in total,
Persona 3 had 3 re-releases across 2 generations
Persona 4 had 4 Re-Releases across 4 generations
Persona 3 will have 3 Re-Releases across 2 generations.
If we're counting spin-off titles,
Persona 4 had
- Arena in 2012 for PS3 / XB360
- Arena Ultimax in 2013 for Arcades, 2014 for PS3 and Xbox 360, and 2022 for PC, Switch and PS4. That's 2 console generations, excluding the physical Arcade Machine Version.
- Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth which is ALSO a Spinoff for Persona 3's cast, releasing in 2014 for the Nintendo 3DS.
- Persona Q New Cinema Labyrinth which is shared by Persona 3 AND Persona 5 for the 3DS in 2018,
- Persona 4 Dancing All Night for the Vita in 2015 and PS4 in 2018, that's 2 console generations.
Persona 3 had
- The aforementioned Persona Q Games, Shadow of the Labyrinth and New Cinema Labyrinth.
- Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight in 2018 for the PS4.
Persona 5 had
- Persona Q New Cinema Labyrinth
- Persona 5 : Dancing In Starlight (2018, PS4)
- Persona 5 Strikers on PS4, Switch and PC in Feb. 2020 (Feb. 2021 outside of Japan)
Persona 4 has the most spin-off games at a staggering 5 spinoff games across 2 console generations, compared to Persona 3's 3 spin-offs (2 of which are shared) across 2 generations, and 5's 3 spin-offs across 2 Nintendo Generations (3DS to Switch) and 1 Playstation Generation.
For Comparison, Skyrim initially released on PC, PS3 and XB360 in 2011, PS4 and XB1 in 2016, Switch in 2017, and PS5 / XBSX in 2021. That's 4 Re-Releases across 3 PS/XB generations and a first-time re-release onto a Nintendo platform.
Persona 4 ties with Skyrim for re-releases, but it also has 5 spin-off games to go with it.
And only now after the fans been begging them for about a decade to release games outside of Playstation, only now Atlus, Sega or whoever reilise how big Persona is and that they've been holding the franchise back. Announcement of the trilogy on Xbox game show was basically the biggest thing there.
Reminder: Persona 4 came out on PS2 in 2008. The same version came out on PS4 years later in digital form. In the meantime, Persona 4 Golden came for Vita in 2012. One re-release. In 2020 it came on Steam. 2nd re-release. And in 2023 we're getting a third one for all the other platforms. Got it? That's what we're comparing.
First of all, there was no P4 or P4G on PS4 what are you talking about? P4 was ported on PS3 and it's not backwards compatible on PS4. P4G was just announced for PS4 and we don't even know when it's coming yet.
Point I'm making is why even compare amount of re-releases across gens because say TES in addition to being re-released across different gens was also expanding its playerbase by releasing on other platforms while Persona was not doing that and that is more important for a game's growth. GTA 5 exists across 3 gens so what are you gonna compare Persona with GTA 5 now?
GTA 5 is more of a RE4 case I'd say.
