What's the absolute earliest you can fish? I've spent a few days giving that kid soda pop but he hasn't said anything about his net (or does that even matter?). Also, I know that the Shiroku Store lady has the hook, but she seems to ignore me until I take the job (I forget when it opens but I think it's in May).

I swear, you'd think with how many hours I've put into both the original and Golden I'd know all of this stuff, but some of the more obscure stuff still eludes me...

Should be April. Visit the Shiroku pub at night and talk to her. You'll get the option to feed a ladybug to her fish and the first item it spits out will be the fish hook.

Yeah, that's what I'm trying to do, but she keeps saying that I need to come back, which means that even though I have bugs I must not be fulfilling some other condition.

I happen to have a save on 19 Apr on my current run. I loaded it and tested it with both a gem in my inventory and without. That woman does want a gem in your inventory before the fishhook dialogue will trigger.

As for whether Calm Pesces or Lying Hableries drop gems, I'm not sure. I rescued Yukiko on 18 Apr, so I could only get the fishhook on 19 Apr and get the fishing rod on 20 Apr.

So, I spent the last couple of hours grinding the first floor but never got any gems, while the Trance Twins on the 3rd floor do drop a gem (Iolite), so it seems that the earliest I can fish is April 20th, since Yu can't go out at night after a trip to the TV World.

Still, I'm pretty sure that's a lot earlier than in vanilla P4, so that's a good thing!

I think it might be helpful to check the network regularly. I usually don't do what others do, but I can see what may be done on a particular day - e.g. If someone goes fishing on 20 Apr, then I know the fishing rod might be obtainable by then.

I do, and that's why I was so confused; I saw some people had gone fishing really early, and couldn't fathom why.

Probably by players of NG+ for the most part. I spent most of April rushing to get enough Knowledge to top the exams. I usually won't fish unless I have very high diligence and I've already read the Beginner's Fishing book.

Same here. There really isn't a point to fishing until that book is read, and Diligence is at least level 3 (and getting the point boosts and money from Dojima from the exams on the first run are important).
