Shuffle Time - Magician Card

How exactly does this choice work? I am currently grinding for skill cards (I'm already level 99 so stuff like exp and items are useless) and, despite having several Personas with a Null (element) rather than Repel/Absorb Magician keeps saying "no skills could be leveled up" (paraphrased). I do not understand this mechanic one bit...

Null passive skills won't evolve any further. You need Repel to evolve into absorb I believe. Same thing as to a maragi won't evolve into a Agilao.

Ah, I see. I guess it's for balance since you do get some Nulls pretty early in the game (earliest, IIRC, is Sarasvati?), so getting some Absorbs really early would make the game so much easier. Thanks for the link and clarification!
