just a quick question for everyone, is there a walk feature in-game if you're using a keyboard? could really be useful in pre-emptive strikes against shadows.

Not really, also I use a controller and I can see that walking/moving slowly towards a shadow, be it from behind or not, does not affect the shadow's detection radius, at least I tried it multiple times and didn't see any change.

While walking slowly from behind, the shadow will detect you at the same range as it would if you were running, so your best bet would you to wait it turn its back towards you and run in with a strike.
