However, after some time, you also get really safe on ways to recover SP in general, so you can branch out if you like, there are plants that can be keys to chests as well if I remember correctly.
1. Farm items in the TV world. There are no locked chests in Yukiko's Castle L1 and the Reaper doesn't appear there. Open the chests, exit to the dungeon entrance (this resets the chests but not the map), re-enter, and repeat. Each chest drops one of these - Life Stone, Peach Seed, Revival Bead, Vanish Ball, Snuff Soul, and Soul Drop. The last two recover SP.
2. Level up the Hermit SL quickly and pay to recover SP. It's still going to be very expensive, but if you have a lot of cash, it can be useful in a pinch.
3. Grind. With enough levels and quality equipment, you can power through trash mobs more easily and save SP.
4. Equip items that recover SP per turn. Find some easy trash mob (e.g. in Yukiko's Castle), destroy all but one enemy, and keep guarding. The lone enemy will do very little damage, but your entire party will restore SP while guarding.
5. Identify tactics that are uniquely suited for your party. For example, if you can deal a lot of damage using multi-target physical attacks, consider using them instead of magical attacks because you can get healing easily. If you have accumulated a large number of items, consider using them instead of skills so you can save on SP.
6. You can also buy the drinks and grow tomatoes, but I feel they don't contribute much on their own and are best used in combination with the above strategies.
After you get your party going, you shouldn't need that many SP recovery items. You can then grow whatever plant that you think you need. I like Corn, Eggplants, and Melons, but Cabbages can also be useful if you lack curatives.
