Which Persona 2?

I've played P4 back in the days and couldn't even pass the first case 'cause it was my first ever RPG game and I'm so dumb back then. so I watched the anime instead. and I finished Persona 5 not long ago and now currently playing P4G.

Well, gameplay-wise sure 5 is a lot better. I mean a Lot. but aesthetically, I love 4 more. from chara to Ost it sure has a special place in my heart lmao.

I've only been able to fully play P4G. I really wanted to play P5R but my younger sister wouldn't let me. Thankfully Atlus released 4 on Steam and was at a great price. So obviously I'm going to say Persona 4 Golden. I did watch my sister play Royal and really, really wanted to play it, so 4 was a nice alternative, although I did play 5 in secret for about a week until I got caught. I'm also in the very early stages of P3F (playing it on our PS3). For me, 4 wins for best plot and characters. I think there was better chemistry between them and they felt more like friends rather than co-workers. Don't get me wrong, 5 has great characters, I just prefer 4's cast more. 5 has better gameplay and dungeons and a cooler concept of summoning and the whole Metaverse thing. Another thing with 4 is that they weren't so caught up in fame. I liked how they were doing this because they were the only ones who could solve the murders, and I also love mysteries! I love the music in this game. Time to Make History is still my favorite battle song in the series, and I also loved the relationship between Nanako and Yu. Although I love a lot of things about this game, I think my least favorite part was Rise's dungeon. I did not like the whole strip club thing. BUT it felt necessary because it was a big metaphor. There were also a lot of great and memorable moments in this game. My two favorite parts were the cross-dressing competition and Kings's Game. (I think the animation did an amazing job for King's Game) Someone on this discussion mentioned that 5 focuses on Joker too much and I'll have to agree. Another thing that was mentioned was that 5 held your hand too long, which I also agree with. I love this game. I fell in love with it my second day because it never became dull. The story was intriguing and I loved the characters a lot. Another thing that makes this cast better was Naoto. She became my favorite character and I think she was a powerful character too, addressing sexism in the police force. So yeah, I like this game. If Atlus were to ever make like a Persona 4 ReGolden, then it probably would amazing! If done right of course.

P3. Someone already said it... pointing a gun at your head to summon your persona was horrifying and fascinating.

Admittedly, I have not played P5 yet. :(

I don't know which part is my favorite part yet because I would like to play them in order but where can one get Persona 1 and 2 nowadays?
I already have 3 and 4 waiting to be played on my PS2 but I can't find affordable copies of the first two parts (which would interest me more than part 3 and 4 from the look of them) :(

A hacked Vita for free, or you can buy them in the PS store. A PS3 digitally or on disc.

sorry I would have answered sooner, but steam didn't give me any notification this time^^
I'm about to play Persona 1 and 2 now I've found a site where I can download them for my chipped PS1, I'm already very excited. I prefer the seemingly more somber atmosphere...
I would have bought them on the PSN store if that was possible in Germany...but whole Europe is locked out? pretty strange and annoying...well if they don't want money from European customers....I could use an emulator (if I knew how to do this lol) but I feel more comfortable on a console. well maybe I'll comment on my experience if the thread is still alive until then xD

It's a similar deal here in Australia. Persona 1 isn't on the store, but it can be found on the PlayStation Classic console, which isn't too hard to find last I checked.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin is available on the PSN store here on a PlayStation 3, but not Eternal Punishment. However strangely enough, it is available on the US store.

It's not too much hassle to configure a separate PSN account on your PS3 for somewhere in the USA, and there are plenty of places that sell USA PSN gift cards online (eg. Playasia) to avoid needing a USA credit card. From there, it's an easy purchase. There are plenty of guides online.

Once you've finished downloading the game, you can hop back to your usual PSN profile on the PS3 and the games you have downloaded from the USA PSN account will still be available and good to play

I've heard you can do something similarly with the PS Vita, where the PSN account info is tied to the memory card you are using. If you have two memory cards, you can have one for different regions - but don't quote me on that as I haven't tried it. I only have a single memory card, and they're expensive.

In any case, there are options for purchasing it, but they don't make it easy.

P1: get the PSP version, and avoid the PS1 version since it has a hilariously bad translation.

P2: get Innocent Sin on PSP and Eternal Punishment on PS1/PSN.

Oh yeah, they changed it to be set in the USA or something right? I vaguely recall reading something about that.

A lot of awkward sentences, character names/personalities/races were changed, and half the game is gone.

Yeah that sucks. There are so many games, especially older games, that never came out to the west, or came out in very bad shape. Valkyria Chronicles 3 is one I was particularly frustrated by (which never saw an official translation, although it appears that incomplete fan translations exist). I imported it and some other games from Japan, and have been spending time in each day over the the past 2+ years studying Japanese - just with the hope that I may one day understand them.

I would like to at least be able to have a good idea of what is being said, and to be able to look up the rest in a dictionary as required. That's probably still more accuracy than I would get otherwise (if an official translation is even made). Most of the games I would play are turn-based, so I probably wouldn't have to be that great at Japanese to make use of it (particularly for games also designed to be played by kids).

The downside is that I hardly have any spare time for playing games these days due to the study... :steamfacepalm:

At least the complete game and translation happened with the PSP version, but that took a long time and it really needs a PC port with the original soundtrack as an option

yeah Autralia and Germany are often excluded from gaming purchases it's really unfortunate, but thanks for enlightening me about the options I have with the PSN store :) If I had known earlier^^I'm not really accustomed to the online gaming possibilites, up to now my consoles never went online. I love inserting discs and start playing like in the good old times. That's why I absolutey don't know about strategies to purchase games that are only available abroad.
But I've got Persona 1 and 2 running on my PSX now, I definately plan on starting tomorrow, finally I can play them.
I purchased a PSP version of Persona 1 but my ordered got cancelled after 2 days! I was so enraged because I was extremely happy that I got it for 50 euros.
But well I'm already happy about the possibility to play it on the PSone - it's a shame that content was cut but well....better than nothing....AND - the soundtrack is a lot better on the PSone version!

I've played P3FES, P4G and P5R and my list would be P3=P4>=P5.

Gameplay-wise P4=P5>P3 (I will get to this)

Visual theme P5>P3>P4

Story P4=P3>P5

Characters P4>P3>P5

Music P3=P4=P5 (All of them are great in their own respective games.)

In story based video games, characters and story (duh) is the most important things I look for. Yes, gameplay should be entertaining enough to keep you going on the story and none of the Persona games lack serious gameplay problems.

In that regard P4 has the best characters and chemistry, as well as great story motive and brilliant writing; every character has their own life, their own traits and personal weaknesses etc. to add on to the story. It's really well crafted and blends in with the visual theme best in all three games, by far. However, dungeons are really bland and gets repetative/boring unless you busy yourself with fusions, skill cards etc. a lot. That doesn't change the fact that combat is fun as other games and music selection is top notch.

P3 has the best effects on story; starts with intriguing animations and unexplained mystery which deepens player's curiosity, best in all three games on this regard. It lacks in gameplay department but because of that it has a unique playstyle, differentiates itself from P4 and P5. Again, music selection is great and fits it's theme the best. Characters feels less involved with each other, just like P5 but it isn't a disadvantage at all.

P5 is the best in the graphics and effects department. It's literally a pleasure to see all those fancy animations and clever menu designs. Music is incredibly good and dungeon-- sorry, PALACE crawling is more fun than other games, also baton pass was one of the best improvements in combat imo. One thing I didn't liked was negotiating with demons. You're basically fighting with personas without an user on them and negotiating can get super boring quickly. Old card system was better and it had great potential to improve but they chose to integrate SMT's system to Persona which wasn't that of a good idea imo. I know some people liked it, mostly people from main SMT series but it was a downgrade for me, a huge one. That's why P5's gameplay is not better than P4 for me.

I've played P4 first and P5 last, and I think playing P4 first is the best one to get into Persona series, which sets a good learning curve compared to other games and explains important story points better than the others. P4 has a special place in my heart and my favorite game from the persona trilogy, with P3 following closely in second place. I loved P5 too, but compared to other Persona games it was a bit hollow, I loved some of the plot points of P5 a lot tho but I won't be talking about them because of spoilers.
