Going back to vanilla P4 is kinda painful after all the great changes to gameplay made in P4G, and the Adachi social link is great imo. The gap between P4 and P4G is larger than the gap between P5R and P5 to the point where getting P5 vanilla isn't even a bad choice these days considering Royal is a full 60$ and vanilla is 20$ (once Royal goes on sale for 40$ though I would say it's worth it).
Having a small gap between P5 and P5R isn't necessarily a bad thing though considering P5's gameplay was already top notch and Royal just makes some minor QoL changes.

For me, I have P5, but I disliked the game a lot and refused to pay any more for P5R. When the pricing was announced, some players balked at the price too.
For P4G, it used to be a PS Vita exclusive. I got a used Vita for P4G, then double-dipped for the PC version for convenience.
Of course, adding some QoL changes and a single new dungeon shouldn't warrant releasing an entirely new GAME instead of a expansion dlc pack for the old players. For Golden is was understandable because it was ported from PS2 to Vita, but for P5R... they literally charge 60 bucks for a Persona 5.5 on the SAME CONSOLE THE OG RELEASED ON. It's really stupid.
Well, I guess if someone really feels very strongly about those two guys... Maybe he might want P5 over P5R? Ha!
As for the dlc issue, Atlus made a smart business move. For players who like P5, they will pony up the time and money anyway.
In P4G, like someone in this thread earlier said, they added so many new and great features that are basically essential to enjoying the experience that is P4. Going from P4G to P4 is really hard and P4 just isn't fun to playthrough after playing Golden. That's how much Golden added. Golden was also dropped in an era where re-releasing newer versions of games was the norm, and it was ported to a brand new console on top of that, so I wouldn't object to them charging full price for it.
Meanwhile in P5R, after having played P5, the jump isn't nearly as big. Sure, the QoL changes are always welcome like refilling ammo after each fight, or having baton pass unlocked for everyone from the get-go, but asking 60 dollars for what is essentially the same game with an expansion when the base game is currently 20 dollars is a tall order imo, and in this day and age of massive expansions like Blood and Wine being released, there really shouldn't be an excuse for Atlus to not release Royal's changes in a 20 dollars dlc pack (hell they could even make it 30 dollars if they wanted to) and they might even make more money then because more people would be willing to pay for that over buying the same game again for 60$.
But then again what do I know, whenever I tell people to wait for a heavy sale to buy Royal if they already played P5, I get downvoted to hell and people say that paying full price for the same game is 'definitely worth it'. The only reason Atlus still makes money off this is thanks to dumb Persona fans.
