Well duh, you're playing as a student after all.

It's a story heavy JRPG.

This game has pretty much 2 core gameplay mechanics:
1. Dungeon crawler JRPG.
2. Micromanaging a socialization sim.

The 2nd part can be a hit or miss depending if you like the writing or not, but basically you have a whole year to get to know the people of the town. Your relationships helps build how powerful your "Persona" and your party gets, and actually feels really rewarding by the end of the game.

If you're not into the japanese highschool anime trope you might not like it, but imo everything is really well written and voiced.

I'm 37 and still playing this game. It's a standard story driven J-RPG with turnbased combat.

Ironically; the best comparison IMHO would be FF5 (with the job system). Whereas Final Fantasy focusses on the personal story of the protagonist; persona games have been more encompassing where they ALSO spend significant focus on the storylines of all the sidecharacters.

The story itself is about the struggles of coming to grips (in THIS persona) with the different facets of life...mainly; interpersonal struggles. The overarching story is of a serial killer doing his deed through the methods of the 13th hour (or in this persona the Midnight Channel, a Japanese Urban Myth like we have bloody mary)

So genre wise it's a slice of life, Deteective mystery with a J-RPG system.

I played Catherine and I was skipping the "coversation in the bar" parts completely bcos it was boring for me. Is it something like this?

I'm 45 and loving the Persona games, though I guess whether that's because I'm immature or the game targets an older audience than you think might be up for speculation. But considering it has a PEGI 16 rating I'd say it probably isn't targetted at 14 year olds at least :)

Yeah, except it's pretty much 90% of the game. The prologue is also quite text heavy and you're really only given control after about 1-2 hours in.

So if you're not into some text heavy JRPG then this game might not be for you.

You probably aren't going to enjoy the game much if you just want to skip the story. There's a lot of talking, deciding what activities to do aside from dungeon crawls anmd stuff so yeah...if you were bored by Catherine, chanses are this won't be up your alley either i'm guessing.

But it is a great game, for me when i start playing it's hard to stop, i always want to do just one more day :D

This game is almost all story. If you don't like visual novels or those kind of really heavy narrative-driven games, this probably isn't for you.

It can basically be summarized as:
80% visual novel
20% Pokemon combat

That said, I personally despise VNs and somehow find myself enjoying the Persona series because of the characters and the writing. They were enough to charm me over even though I generally don't like these kinds of games, for whatever that's worth.
I'm an adult as you are and I value this as something more nostalgic from when a teenager- the puppy friendships, the silly adventures, the gossip over trivial matters nowadays and the insecurities/fears about expectations of adulthood. Catherine has more of a mature theme, though - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ around, and enjoying ♥♥♥♥♥♥, or settling - the fear of that responsibility.

if you are into teens saving the world then yeah because the only strong point of this game is the story and cast. music is fine but gameplay is repetitive and lackluster

Seriously..get over your hangup about childish things. Your never to old for anything. I'm 64 And I play with my grandchildren and love every second of it

You can resume into 3 things

You like good turn based combat ?
You like deep story development ?
You like even a little bit anime ?

If any of those is yes, than your chances of liking it are high
persona-lly(hah) i am 26 and the friendship talk is a little too much of a cringe to me but i really like the combat system and how you have to fight against time to unlock everything

the murder mystery is nice
what you can do in combat is amazing
and i really love how developed the characters are

how is persona 4 combat good ? Its repetitive and very streamlined. Every bossfight is the exact same save for some unique event because its neede for the story

I like good turn-based rpg and i dont find it in this game

If gameplay is enjoyable then that's all that bothers me. I am far older than the OP and was enjoying the game until it had crash issues for me, will return once a patch comes along. Playing the trails of cold steel titles at the moment to tide me over, though I got that stuck into the first of that series that I now have the other 2 in my library lined up to play so unsure when I will get to P4G.
