Question About The Reaper
Okay, a few times I've been told the Reaper will show up if I open too many chests. I've been told about the sound of chains and a warning from Teddy/Rise to not open a chest. Bear in mind I've never played P4 Golden.

Ok, so I have never actually seen the Reaper. I have opened chests, and when I open one and hear those chains, and ominous breathing, to me that meant he's here, actively hunting me down from somewhere, so I get the hell out of there immediately, cuz in any Persona game, those chains mean you are for sure being chased by an already present Reaper. He's already there, and it's f***ing time to leave or die.

However, you also hear a warning from your navigator about Death/The Reaper appearing, and I didn't get that.

Just now I heard those chains, high-tailed it to the nearest exit, and realized the exit wasn't as close as I'd hoped it was, but I made it. so my question is:

Was I in any real danger yet? Was he there, hunting me down from his spawn point? Or would I have had to open another chest after I heard those chains? I mean, in P3/P3P and P4, you hear chains, you run away ASAP, but it kinda seemed like he should have caught up to me this time...

Does he literally come from the inside of a chest? Or does he show the old-fashioned way and track you down to punish people when they open too many?

That just means you've been on the floor a little long and he can show up in a regular chest. He won't physically appear unless you open said chest which will warn you before you open it anyway so farm to your heart's content. Though I agree that it is spine chilling, especially with headphones... :2016bee:

You can find the Reaper inside a chest after hearing the sound of the chains. I think when you try to open the game it warns you of the danger but facing this enemy at a low level is a bad idea.

Hearing that on one of the first floors of Yukiko castle got a jump out of me...Was used with that on Tartarus but I never triggered it on the og persona 4....so yieks

Ok, so he's not actually present when I hear those chains then, and I need to purposely open a chest to trigger him, and even actively ignore a warning then. This is very different from P3 and P4. I heard chains, I said "CRAP", and I ran like a b!tch.

Turns out I was perfectly safe. Well then. This certainly changes my future reactions to the ominous breathing and dragging chains sounds I keep hearing. I thought I was moments from being pwn'd, so the last thing on my mind was opening another chest. I'd just go to another floor and that sound would be gone, so I thought I fled the scene and escaped certain doom.

From what I've been reading though, you need to open exactly 20 chests to get him to haunt you though, instead of the old way where you just stay on a floor too long and he gets all p!issed about you loitering and decides to go kill you. I suppose I'd need to verify this 20-chest thing still, but it seems about right.

Something to note is that even if he does appear in a chest, you can make him leave by fighting some regular shadows. The sound of chains will stop and you can loot the chest which will no longer have the warning attached. :2016bee:

Good. My entire dilemma was about trying to beat the damn Contrarian King in Yukiko's surprisingly hard castle.

I was actively avoiding all chests cuz I thought the Reaper would randomly show up and hunt me down, yet I really wanted/needed some Physical Mirrors to beat that OP King boss, and those were supposedly in chests on high-level floors.

If I can just avoid that monster I can get back to looting and stop running to a new floor every time I hear chains. I gotta figure out exactly what floors Physical Mirrors are actually on. I get the feeling I don't need to keep fighting those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ floor 7 Positive Kings that keep spawning Bambinos, Bronze Dice and Knights. Just such a drain on my SP, and those guys have far more HP than they ought to have. :steamsalty:
