No he’s not.
If he’s afraid of kanji for every reason it’s because of the rumors that he beat up a biker gang single handedly and the fact that he’s strong enough to carry a chair school desk like a paper weight.
He’s no homophobic, he’s kanjiPhobic.(which is honestly fair. He’s my favorite character basically ever but the dude is terrifying)

A) Because he's 16 years old during the events of the game in 2008 rural Japan. He doesn't get much if not any interaction with LGBT people, and common in his age will jab at his friends who do things he doesn't understand.

B) (Non-canon as it was cut from the game) He is at least bi, and is making homophobic jokes to try and separate himself from it. This does happen irl, closeted gay people do lash out at the LGBT community in denial of who they really are.

It’s not a slur, it’s a genuine medical term referring to people with an intelligence score of less than 50(or something around that level, depends on the test).
