Being good is relative. But, considering that 96% of the ~7000 reviews here on Steam are positive and that most reviews have less than 10 hours of play time registered, I'd say quite a few people enjoyed it in previous releases.
The first ever Persona game I heard of was Persona 5 and I just watched someone else playing it. It was interesting, but in the end waaaaay too long and drawn out.
And still, I bought P4G the second it was on Steam. P5 is more stylish and has better graphics, sure. But considering that I didn't know anything about it, I couldn't put it away in the weekend. I wanna know how the story goes on. The first 3-4 hours were very intriguing and I was so sucked in.
If you like japanese games, JRPGs or maybe even VNs, then you'll love this. I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ LOVED Danganronpa series, maybe that's the reason that the first 3 hours were not a problem for me. But for some people it might be just too much dialogue.
I'm not a big fan of JRPGs, but I've played a number of ones I really enjoy in the past. Earthbound, Chrono Trigger & Anachronox. Just to give you an idea of my tastes.
As others have mentioned, the dungeons are bland visually, which is probably my biggest complaint. Also the PSTV and older versions just ran, like well the lower budget console games they were. Visual yuck. So i basically stopped playing newer games till I was done because it helped me tolerate the visuals and framerate.
But I was really drawn in by the story and most of the characters. The gameplay is pretty tried and true turn-based stuff, a tad less forgiving than a lot of games, which was nice.
The persona system was exciting, always trying to make a better one but also needed different ones for different occasions.
I like the social link stuff and got connected to a few of the side characters pretty strongly.
If you can tolerate the old visuals and enjoy turn-based RPG, you won't need nostalgia to enjoy the game. The issue may be the social link system, which some people just never came to grips with.
I like the 'okage the shadow king' look to this game. Still cleaner than vita/ps ver
Like there is a low-res jpeg hill in the background of some shots I find really out of place.
