Fix the terrible localization
Japanese characters got their family names & given names reversed. This is unacceptable in 2020.

Go away.

It's way worse than just simple name swap (which is annoying as hell too, I don't know why it's even done, especially in game like this, where you are basically a Japanese student in Japan)

They are using honorifics in translation (which is always good btw) BUT.
A half of honorifics are different ones!

For example
Audio (I'm talking about original one, not dubbed crap): Female-chan
Subs: Female-san

Audio: Male-senpai
Subs: Male-san

What's the point of using honorifics if you use different ones than they were used originally?
I mean, that's even worse than cutting honorifics completely, because it's creating way bigger dissonance.

Down with the west dabbling with names btw.
You still hear original audio.
Not to mention about situations where someone is calling other person "Senpai" and they are using character name.
Or someone is calling someone else LastName-honorific and they are using FirstName-honorific

Please dton't create cheap excuses for ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation.

They also did that in Persona 5 which is not that old of a game, and will probably do it in the upcoming games as well, because nobody says anything about it.

It's disrespectful towards Japanese people.

In Persona 5 they used honorifics as they were used originally and never called used Name->Surname swap when only name or surname was used.
Persona 5 translation is WAY, WAY, WAY better.

hopefully someone mods it to fix it. We've grown so much since Golden and P4 originally came out, and I still can't believe some localizers think they can still get away with it (and they do because the unwashed masses don't care).

Worst example in recent memory is Danganronpa V3. That was a disgustful display.

They probably wanted to pander to the audience that want honorifics and admiring Japanese cultures, but at the same time they worried that those people are too dumb to know anything beside -san.

Japan govt needs to push it further, making it a law for these media publishers to do it properly.

This is what I think, yeah. Atlus is interested in making the localization "feel" Japanese rather than being too literal about it. Most players of an English release probably won't have a complete understanding of Japanese honorifics and it will be enough for them.

The game also didn't original have Japanese audio either so there wouldn't be anything to create a dissonance between the two.

It's still not as bad as Nintendo games. They literally fully rewrote my favorite game all time (Xenoblade 2). Thankfully I know enough Japanese (5 years of learning Kanji), so i imported original Japanese release and played it in Japanese.

Probably not as bad as the Ace Attorney series.

Also worth understanding that localization decisions are made jointly so try not to go to crazy blaming Western publishers for attacking your games.

Ace Attorney is what Persona would be in an alternate timeline if the Revelations' canon was kept.

Eat your burgers, Nate.

Xenoblade 2 is a travesty. I honestly wouldn't be against legislation that would ban that localization practice.

About the same. But the problem is - they completely censored it too.
While Ace Attorney is debatable (this game is just a one big pun and it's impossible to translate it faithfully without extensive translation notes about kanji, obscure popcultural references that are obscure for many Japanese people too etc).

-They changed all characters names.
-The removed and replaced everything about Japanese popculture and tropes (and this game is heavily focused on this)
-They completely removed all Christian references (and almost all XENO games ale literally fundamentally based on Christian symbolism - including this one), Homura is literally a Holy Grail and that's just the beginning. Christian symbols are literally the base of this game.
-They completely removed Japanese and Chinese folklore which took a huge part in this story.
-They completely altered all personalities (including main characters)
-They completely dumbed down the dialogue (or rather, just completely rewrote it to match the level of American cartoons)
-They almost completely changed whole lore and world basics
-Almost all 'kizuna talk' scenes (I don't know how it's called in English because - as I said - I played completely in Japanese and only compared it with my friend that used western copy) are completely made up.

And that's really just a tip of the iceberg.
