Step-by-step instructions to getting this game to work in DxWnd
If you run this game using the latest version of DxWnd rather than the much older one that Steam supplies, you can forget about the inconvenience of inverted x- and y-axis and your game will run flawlessly!

1. Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ and click on the Download button to get the most recent version of DxWnd (as of today, May 16, 2019, the last update to this program was done 2019-05-03).
2. Unpack the .rar file to a folder within Steam\steamapps\common\Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy\; I called the same name as the DxWnd download file: v2_05_16_build. You can delete the Steam-supplied DxWnd folder if you like as it won't be used.
3. The two files "d3d9.dll" and "ddraw.dll" (right underneath credits.4xm) need to be cancelled out; simply add a digit to the suffix of each file. Example: d3d9.dll becomes d3d9.dll2.
4. Open up your v2_05_16_build folder and double click on "dxwnd.exe." We actually have to make very few changes to the default setup here, so the following steps will be easy.
5. In the resulting DXWnd window, click on Options -> Expert mode.
6. Click on Edit -> Add; the tabbed window will be opened to the "Main" tab.
7. Add a name for your game: Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy
8. In both the "Path:" and "Launch:" fields directly under the "Name:" field, click on the search box [".."] to the right of the text box and navigate to your Steam\steamapps\common\Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy folder and click on the "game.exe" file.
9. Click on the "Tweaks" tab. On the left hand side, scroll down to "input:MouseMoveByEvent" and highlight this field. Then click on the green + button below to place this tweak on the right-hand side Active tweaks box
10. Click okay. The Edit menu will disappear and you'll be back at the little DXWnd window, but with a Sherlock Holmes icon in the main window. Single click on the icon, go to the "File" menu and click on "Save."
10. To play The Mystery of the Mummy simply double click on the Sherlock Holmes icon in the DxWnd window!

Further changes you may want to make ...

11. The default setting for the window size, found at the bottom of the Edit\Main tab, is x 50 y 50 W 800 H 600. This placed a too-small-for-my-tastes window at the upper left of my wide-screen monitor. So I centered the window and enlarged it by changing the width and height to 1280 and 1024, and by also clicking on the "Desktop center" radio button to the right of the width and height boxes. Of course you can change those values to whatever you want.
12. Depending upon the speed of your CPU, you may find that when you move your cursor the camera rotation is too fast for comfort. To slow this down, go to Edit -> Modify -> Timing tab, and on the right-hand side in the "System speed" box check the "CPU slow down" box and change the ratio to 1:X, where X is a variable number. Each user must experiment to find the right ratio for comfortable gaming; on my core i5 machine I found that a ratio of 1:20 slowed down the camera enough for me to play the game comfortably. I suggest you start with 1:2 and work your way up until you find the right ratio for your own machine and comfort.
13. Don't forget to save your changes (DxWnd will prompt you to do that if you forget and then attempt to close the program).
14. Finally, you have to run the game from within DxWnd, do not click on the Steam-supplied shortcut.
15. Enjoy!

Update: It worked for once. I just had to run DXWnd as an administrator. You might want to add that to the instructions for anyone with the same problem as me.

I also find it helpful to click the "Mouse" tab in the editor, select "Keep cursor within window" and "Keep cursor fixed" under "Cursor handling", select "Invert Y axis" and "Invert X axis" under "Invert mouse", then select "LOCKED" under "Mouse Clipper". This makes the cursor move much smoother.

Thank you, Smectymnuus, your instructions are great and the game runs fine but as you said, the instructions are very detailed and one needs to pay attention applying new settings. I also needed to re-read them, because I made a mistake on the first attempt.

@Ziga05, glad you got it going! I find it rewarding when I manage to get something that is less than transparent up and running when I had previously not gotten something right. Perseverance pays off!

I went through all the steps and i am stuck at step 9 because the layout of the window does not match the description you are giving, i went through all the tabs to find the "input:MouseMoveByEvent" but nothing, anything that can be done or is similar to that?

I think you must have misinterpreted one of the previous steps. I just downloaded the latest version of DxWnd, and the developer has changed the verbiage that is used in Step 5 from "Expert mode" to "Extended mode." Regardless of the way it is displayed in your version, be sure that this is checked.

Then in step 6, after you click on Edit -> Add, you should end up with a tabbed display like the following link:
http://store.steampowered.com
In this display there should be a "Main" in the bottom left (I've circled this in the screenshot in red) and there should also be a "Tweaks" tab (circled in purple). Click on the Tweaks tab.

The following link shows this "Tweaks" tab; the "input:MouseByEvent" tweak has been circled in red. Click the green + button at the bottom to send this to the right-hand box.

Hope this helps!

Sorry that the links in post #98 didn't work, but the imgur links in posts #99 and 100 do indeed work.

Again, hope this helps!

It works for me, thank you !

@Ian Wheelbuckets,
Glad it all worked out! Have fun with the game!

I do all steps to the t that you say, but dxwnd does not open.

My guess is that you can't open the downloaded file from Sourceforge because it is packed in an .rar file, not a zip file. To open .rar files I recommend a free utility called "7zip." Go to https://www.7-zip.org/download.html and install 7-zip on your computer. Then use the 7-zip file manager to open the DxWnd download.
