Step-by-step instructions to getting this game to work in DxWnd
If you run this game using the latest version of DxWnd rather than the much older one that Steam supplies, you can forget about the inconvenience of inverted x- and y-axis and your game will run flawlessly!

1. Go to https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/ and click on the Download button to get the most recent version of DxWnd (as of today, May 16, 2019, the last update to this program was done 2019-05-03).
2. Unpack the .rar file to a folder within Steam\steamapps\common\Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy\; I called the same name as the DxWnd download file: v2_05_16_build. You can delete the Steam-supplied DxWnd folder if you like as it won't be used.
3. The two files "d3d9.dll" and "ddraw.dll" (right underneath credits.4xm) need to be cancelled out; simply add a digit to the suffix of each file. Example: d3d9.dll becomes d3d9.dll2.
4. Open up your v2_05_16_build folder and double click on "dxwnd.exe." We actually have to make very few changes to the default setup here, so the following steps will be easy.
5. In the resulting DXWnd window, click on Options -> Expert mode.
6. Click on Edit -> Add; the tabbed window will be opened to the "Main" tab.
7. Add a name for your game: Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy
8. In both the "Path:" and "Launch:" fields directly under the "Name:" field, click on the search box [".."] to the right of the text box and navigate to your Steam\steamapps\common\Sherlock Holmes The Mystery of the Mummy folder and click on the "game.exe" file.
9. Click on the "Tweaks" tab. On the left hand side, scroll down to "input:MouseMoveByEvent" and highlight this field. Then click on the green + button below to place this tweak on the right-hand side Active tweaks box
10. Click okay. The Edit menu will disappear and you'll be back at the little DXWnd window, but with a Sherlock Holmes icon in the main window. Single click on the icon, go to the "File" menu and click on "Save."
10. To play The Mystery of the Mummy simply double click on the Sherlock Holmes icon in the DxWnd window!

Further changes you may want to make ...

11. The default setting for the window size, found at the bottom of the Edit\Main tab, is x 50 y 50 W 800 H 600. This placed a too-small-for-my-tastes window at the upper left of my wide-screen monitor. So I centered the window and enlarged it by changing the width and height to 1280 and 1024, and by also clicking on the "Desktop center" radio button to the right of the width and height boxes. Of course you can change those values to whatever you want.
12. Depending upon the speed of your CPU, you may find that when you move your cursor the camera rotation is too fast for comfort. To slow this down, go to Edit -> Modify -> Timing tab, and on the right-hand side in the "System speed" box check the "CPU slow down" box and change the ratio to 1:X, where X is a variable number. Each user must experiment to find the right ratio for comfortable gaming; on my core i5 machine I found that a ratio of 1:20 slowed down the camera enough for me to play the game comfortably. I suggest you start with 1:2 and work your way up until you find the right ratio for your own machine and comfort.
13. Don't forget to save your changes (DxWnd will prompt you to do that if you forget and then attempt to close the program).
14. Finally, you have to run the game from within DxWnd, do not click on the Steam-supplied shortcut.
15. Enjoy!

Finally, I managed to get the game to work. Thank you very much for the guide! :MFF_Mog:

For those who wanted the game running in Steam (counting time, friends can see it, etc.). I tested a bit arround and ... I was able to start the game in Steam with all the tweeks I made in DxWnd.

The trick was ... save your tweeks, don't close DxWnd BUT start the game in Steam. It worked for me. When I close DxWnd, it will not work in Steam. So just let DxWnd run in the background and start the game in Steam.

Btw ... 2 little tips. My mouse was a bit smoother and calm ... when I turned on the "640*480" mode in the "Game.exe" under properties.

The other thing. I had trouble with fullscreen so I checked "Run in Window" but used a fullscreen size and under "position", I choosed "Desktop". Then the game was fullscreen or at least borderless, I guess.

Thanks for the tips as well! :winter2019happybulb:

It's finally work. I must made more fix before its works. First i use Betatab for steam and deleted those by "Awful" files. Next i must go DxWnd and make more fix. Mousetab: Both invert X and Y axis marked. "Cursor handling" 1, 3, 7 marked, then save. After that run "Hooked" then finally that mouse works.

And full thanks to Smectymnuus. You make this game work.

A couple added tweaks I've found that help:

1. I'm pretty sure this game is natively 640x480, which is weird for a game from 2002. I found that when I lowered it from the default 800x600 to 640x480, the graphics quality improved IMMENSELY, to a frankly unreasonable degree. I genuinely don't know how that small of a size difference borked the graphics so bad. It now looks much closer to the Store screencaps (which, incidentally, are 640x480). The mouse also started functioning near perfectly (as opposed to the not-quite-fully-responsive it was before).

2. On a core i7 machine, a system speed of 1:50 seems to be about right.

3. Under the Compatibility tab, select Fake Version -> Windows XP. This will stop (some?) crashing. My game started crashing between levels 2 and 3, and selecting that made it stop.

4. If you have a problem with the standard Windows cursor appearing in the middle of the screen and twitching, go to Mouse -> Cursor Visibility -> Hide. It seems like it only applies to the default Windows cursor and doesn't affect custom game cursors like this game has.

Seems broken again with the mouse issue with the new DxWnd V2.05.60...has anyone figured out a fix for it?

Thanks in advance!

Nope, I just removed my old DxWnd and replaced it with v2.05.60, followed my directions from start to finish and it worked perfectly. Delete DxWnd and reload again and follow the directions slowly and you'll find your solution.

Thanks for your reply. My issue is that I can't seem to find the tweaks tab you mentioned. Not sure if I am looking under the wrong place or...

I think you probably failed to execute step number 5:

"5. In the resulting DXWnd window, click on Options -> Expert mode."

When you do that all of the tabs will be present and it's no different in v2.05.60, or really any of the recent versions of this little utility. The Main tab will be on the bottom left and the Tweaks tab will be in the middle of the central row of tabs. Then, just follow the installation instructions and you should have the desired results.

Let us know how you get on.
The settings I had to tweak in dxwnd v2.05.60 for the game to play without any problems were the folowing .
In the directx tab, select DirectX version 8,
In the video tab Resolution 640x480,
In the mouse tab Invert X and Y axis,
In the Tweaks tab add input:MouseMoveByEvent in the right column,
In the compatibility tab under Fake version select Windows XP
Hope it helps someone.

Interesting; I had to do none of the above save the Tweaks tab adjustment. Just out of curiosity, what flavor of Windows are you running?

Brilliant, work, lad! Simply BRILLIANT! However, for those who find the appearance of the mouse cursor annoying, I suggest clicking on the "Hide" setting for the mouse cursor under the "Input" tab to remove the annoying visual of the frozen mouse cursor, which remains locked, even though the selection hand icon now moves freely in the game. Just a bit of cleanup for us more anal-retentive types, me lad! LOL
