The second game of the series Victorian Mysteries, not connected to the first one but hugely improved in everything. The story is also based on 1907 Gaston Leroux novel The Mystery of the Yellow Room. The story about a photographer and a reporter, Rouletabille who is sent to investigate a criminal case at the Château du Glandier where a young woman is attacked and almost murdered in the middle of the night inside of a locked room. The room was locked from the inside and the window blocked, can the young detective solve this case?

The pace of the story is really good, the journal helps with all of the information is provided as well as the character's profiles, this mystery game is very well done in many aspects. The graphics have greatly improved from the previous game, as well as the map which adds extra details, sadly it didn't provide a fast traveling function although the game does require you to backtrack at some point.

I enjoyed the hidden objects scenes so much, very detailed and none of them felt out of the place. However, the puzzles were very easy for my taste. The soundtracks fit the atmosphere and setting of the game, thankfully they didn't use the sound effects of the previous game. I wished there were an option to download the tracks, but there is no 'Extra' menu which we usually get in these type of games, to download the music and wallpapers.

The length of the game is good, took me almost five hours to beat it - I took my time to read the journal and everything extra in the game- the good thing that the journal and tasks list does help to you find your next objective since the map is huge and it is all accessible, you'll find yourself roaming around not knowing what to do if you don't read the tasks list.

Very well done story-rich classic Hidden object game, you can play this one even if you haven't played the first game. I highly recommend it to people who enjoy these types of games.

NOTE: My profile got corrupted either when I had a power surge whilst playing, or when I tried to play in offline mode afterwards, so this review is not based upon the completed game.

Story:

Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, who is also the author of The Phantom of the Opera, The Yellow Room is a tale revolving around an attack upon an inventor's daughter. We are the photographer for our reporter/investigator friend, out to solve the mystery of who attacked this woman. How did the assault take place when the door was dead-bolted from the inside, and the only other exit was a barred window? We must piece together the evidence to find our answer!

Our Journal is wonderful and absolutely chock-full of of extra story, but it's also a bit unwieldy. We have tabs for Characters, Evidence and Story: When you're in the Story tab, there are 5 chapters, and you'll have to click on the chapter you'd like to look at before you can read anything. The other tabs are similar, with an extra step you'll have to take before you can view things. There is SO much information in here, a story-lover's dream!

You can access your Task List either by looking at something in the journal, or simply by clicking on the Tasks book in the bottom right corner of the interface.

The story progresses through cutscenes, articles we find, eavesdropping and interactions with other characters. You have dialogue choices, and of course to get the full story you'll want to select them in order (top to bottom), but if you've played before and remember how it goes (or are just impatient), simply select the bottom choice to proceed.

Gameplay:

The main focus of this game is the story, but it has a nice balance of adventuring, hidden objects and puzzles.

Clicking on the MAP will give you an overview, and you need to click on the area you'd like to see (ie. The Train Station or The Chateau). Once you are viewing the area you want to see, there are color-coded indicators: HO Scene, Evidence, Investigate, You Are Here and Completed. There is no insta-transport available.

The to-ing and fro-ing is kept to small areas, for the most part, but there are times where you'll need to backtrack quite a bit.

There are NO HINTS in the adventure portion of the game unless you count the markers on the map that show active areas, and even then it's easy to miss things. I got stuck for a long while, simply because I didn't notice there was a clock off to the side that I could zoom in on. *face palm*

Hidden Object Scenes are mostly your standard to-find lists, but every now and then there will be an interactive item. HINTS for the HOS will need to charge each time you enter a scene.

Sights and Sounds:

This is an older game (2012), so the graphics won't blow you away, but they portray the environment beautifully.

Voiceovers are all done with a French accent, but whether or not they sound authentic, I couldn't tell you... I don't know anyone from France! ;)

The SFX can be annoying, but the music is beautifully dramatic (where called for).

Verdict:

This is an excellent game for those who enjoy sleuthing, and especially for those who love a lot of story. I will definitely return to The Yellow Room one day, and until then, happy gaming, all!

Really quite disappointing. The game was moderately interesting, but in the end, not only do you not solve the mystery yourself, the 'solution' makes no sense, with multiple loose ends, no evidence what so ever, and your own characters efforts apparently meaningless.
The core of the game was supposed to be hidden object game, and there were some, but not very many. And it was often easy to spot items without knowing what you were looking for, simply because they stood out due to looking different from the background.
The game had several puzzles, and they were for the most part fun, but the controls were often awkward or obscure. The main example is one with pieces of a puzzle you have to put into a shape, and it was only by accident I discovered that you could rotate them, and there was no clear indicator if you were moving a piece or rotating it, leaving it up to trial and error.
All and all, I cannot recommend this one. I bought it on sale, and I played the whole thing in about three hours, but the excitement of the chase was ruined by the total flop of a flat and bizarre ending.

A fun mystery; yes dated graphics and a glitch (at least in my game)
where the voice overs completely disappeared even though other sounds were still evident.
I had been enjoying the "French" accents; rather generic but not annoying so it was disappointing when they vanished.
Plus then the character's interactions or information flashed upon the screen and were gone before I realised what information had been imparted; possibly a glitch....
In spite of this, I enjoyed the game and do recommend it.

It was fine, except it was buggy for me. The movie files wouldn't play, and an item never made it into my inventory so I was unable to finish the game.

It is quite good game for its age (2012, info from another review). Nice story, a dated graphics but still rather good. HO screens are extra good for the age of the game, items are clear and with nice contrast. It is easy to find them but still hard enough to find them between the other items. As for me HO scenes are the best parts of this game. Only the moving between places is a little stiff and the end is a little quick and sudden.
My recomentdation is Yes for anybody. It is nice piece from a set of older games and still in quite good shape.

Older HOG, but very good story and HO scenes. The graphics reflect the age of the game - although wide screen is available, I ended up playing mostly in full screen because of the stretching effect of going to wide screen.

I *originally* couldn't get the cut scenes to run, and was disappointed, since a lot of the story content is there. I also couldn't get most of the voice overs. I enjoyed it despite the glitches, so I went with a thumbs up.

*** NOTE: Used Windows to test compatibility and let it adjust to run the game in a better setting (all automatic). Works perfectly now, and the cut scenes and voice actors are great!

There are a few puzzles, but not many. They're generally of easy to medium difficulty.

The ending feels a bit rushed, and is my one disappointment with the game. It should have been possible to involve the player more in the detective's final summation and solution.

Definitely worth adding to your library if you enjoy older-style HOGs with a bit of mystery. I suggest getting it on sale, since you may need to deal with the same glitch that I did.

The game was really fun and interesting. The graphics show that it is an older game, however it was still beautiful. I was a bit disappointed with the ending. In the end, not only do you not solve the mystery yourself, the events told by the detective makes no sense, with multiple loose ends, no evidence and your own characters efforts were not needed to solve the mystery. I would've preferred a better story for the ending, however it was still fun to play. A lot of riddles, puzzles and search games to keep you busy and to help "solve the mystery". This game can also be played on an outdated PC and it runs really smooth. I did not have any issues even though I used my work PC to play this game.

I enjoyed this old-school hidden object game with excellent hidden object scenes (not just junk and not so obvious) and intriguing story line (based upon a French novel). There are plenty of plot twists, and I loved the music. At times, the graphics are crystal clear but not always, Nonetheless, I found the game fun and have purchased another in the series. To me, the game is reminiscent of point-and-click but is definitely part of the hidden object-adventure genre in its early days.

A good game.
