Films/TV series set around L.A. Noire's era?
So I'm currently watching a 6 part mini-series called Mob City starring Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) and a few other familiar faces, as well as Joe Galloway's actor being in the same TV series. Apparantly it's based on a book called L.A. Noir (lol).

Anyhow, I'm downloading another TV series called Boardwalk Empire set around the Mobsters in Atlantic City at the time of the great depression (20s-30s somewhere around there).

Other than that I've watched Gangster Squad, The Untouchables, Public Enemy and... I think that's about it, I'm not sure.

So I was wondering for any other good recommendations set around the era, you know, 20s-30s and after WW2, basically anything that involves the police, mafia and fedoras.

Thanks in advance and cheers.

Edit: The ones I forgot to mention I also watched was Road to Perdition and L.A. Confidential.

Doesn't include Police or Mafia so it doesn't count.

Yeah, already watched that. Mob City has like 2 of the same actors from the game and I even found out it was based on this game sorta and was going to be called LA Noir but Rockstar threatened to sue them so they renamed the series.

Interesting. I will check out Mob City.

The TV/radio series Dragnet
The Black Dahlia (not that great of a movie tbh)
Mullholland Falls
The Big Sleep (actually from the 40's)
Basically any of the hidden film reels? Those are real movies.

Watched Mulholland falls, and yeah I'm looking for something like near the end of the 20th century since you know, less fake deaths. I mean I really enjoyed the Sahara film from the 40s with Humphrey Bogard since it seemed pretty damn realistic but movies such as the All Quiet on the Western front has those fake deaths where they grab their chest before they die and stuff like that. I'm just giving an example here but it's just one of the reasons I don't watch as many old movies.

Mad Men, a TV show you can find on Netflix.
It takes place in the 60's. They are always drinking rye and smoking !

Yeah, it's from where the majority of the actors from the game are.

There's also two movies about the 30's crime wave focused on John Dillinger that might interest you- Dillinger (1973) and Public Enemies (2009). They're both pretty realistic with a lot of violence meted out with tommyguns. Arguably Dillinger is a better movie. Public Enemies is okay, but it feels like Michael Mann is just trying to do Heat: 1930's edition. Still worth a watch.

Chinatown, from the 1970's, heavily influenced a lot of future neo-noir films like L.A. Confidential, and takes place in L.A. during the 30's.

There's a film from the 80's called True Confessions which is based around L.A. politics and the Black Dahlia murder. I found it to be pretty dry and unfocused, though.

I've seen Public Enemy but not the others, I'll check em out.

I enjoyed The Changeling and J. Edgar, both Clint Eastwood films very much. They should give you what you're looking for when on a L.A. Noir type of kick. Perhaps Vertigo and some other Hitchcock films would be good too. I've never seen it but Chinatown with Jack Nicholson looks interesting. Someone already recommened the Dragnet series which is fun but I didn't know that there was an even earlier Dragnet series from the early 50s also created and starred by Jack Webb.

Peaky Blinders (set on 20 to 30's era but focused on UK)
Sin City
Naked Lunch (kind of....Noire film but ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up sci-fi)
Chinatown (the best film Noire I've ever seen, even this game is practically focused on that movie)
Taxi Driver (set on the 80's, but with the mood from the game)

Huh, I just stumbled upon Peaky Blinders like yesterday after watching Gangster Squad again.

Watched both of the Sin Cities already, I even watched the Spirit like last week.

Haven't heard of the 2 others but I think I know the last one if it's with a famous actor whose name I forgot.
