The new anvil sucketh
Playing the game of getting the bars in the right place on the anvil before they cool is a fool's errand. I want my old anvil back.

Hey folks, the latest 2.2.2 patch that just went live has some things to make crafting items on anvils easier:
- The spacing on the anvil for resources to be placed on is now larger, before it had to have atleast a part of the resource touching the direct middle of the slot, now that space is bigger, making it easier to craft if you didn't drop it precise enough.
- Bars heat up about 2x as quick. We saw that the problem wasn't the bars cool down too quick, but that players don't let the bars get to 100% heat.

Rest of the patch notes available in the announcements tab of this forum, or in the in-game patch notes. Enjoy!

The Bar don't need to line up with the indents. Just throw them on the spot, alignment doesn't matter.

They have to be pretty close, and given how fast especially the small bars lose their heat, this function is not great and prone to error. The more items you have, the more fun it gets.

Now, make bars stay hot longer, and maybe this is better. But as-is, it sucks imo.

One word: Ergonomics. When you have placed your tools in good order and with good spacing, time waste are just few seconds.
Saw some players who after placing bars on the anvil starts to look for a hammer( which most of the time is tossed after using on the floor), finds it, finds out that bars are cold, tosses hammer back on floor. reheats bars. And starts to search for hammer again....

I am have the same fun. Trying to get all of my ingots onto the anvil and into the slots or close enough that it will accept it is enjoyable. Would be nice if the ingots stayed heated for longer. Also as a note, i have a second heater right next to my anvil to keep things close along with my hammer.

I've played the game for more than a year--I know most of the tricks of the trade. This is a new save, the furnace, anvil, and hammer are all right next to each other. But...if I could throw the hammer at the anvil, I'd have done it already. :D

Funnily enough they do matter about the outcome of the finished product you can make the weapon look different based on where you put the bars

Yes, but that is just sequence, not alignment.
What i mean is, the Metal bars don't have to be within the lines of the small depressions on the anvil. Just drop them roughly on the number and you're good.

Yea i don't like it either.
Can't subsequently craft on it aswell.

Like put 5 bars on one slot and 5 gems on other slot and craft 5 rings by hitting hammer 5 times - no longer possible on new anvil only 1 at a time if you put more it wont work anymore after single one despite bars being still red hot and you will have to remove the mats and put them back again to craft another one.

The old Anvil was way less janky

I am not able to get anything to craft on the anvil. no matter where i place the bar. I have not been able to craft anything yet. ive tried each recipe to no avail. my bars are red hot and I believe i am using right materials. However i do not see any guide for materials needed to be 100% sure.

I agree to how fast the ingots cool off, as just being a video game, logic and sense should just be put down, and allow the ingots to permanently remain heated, you want them cooled off, drop them in water.

As for making sense when crafting, choosing your recipe, the indents are numbered along with the item you wanting to craft, place ingots/gems respectfully in those indents and follow the items guide carefully.

you are giving the anvil a smack with the blacksmith hammer right? also any item can be made of any material of that type (gem or bar depending on the symbol) and the material has to be at least touching the slot for it to count)

The new anvil does looks pretty cool, it´s bigger than needed since the items were resized down and the option to choose the resources type is great. But also brings a few problems.
When I used it(the new anvil version) for the first time I couldn´t make it work, took me about 15 tries to make a necklace. Despite changing the placement and the position of the resources it wouldn´t do it. Somehow managed to make items but it is a fight to get it done, still happens often to take too long and having to re-heat the Ingots again but sometimes it does feel it´s bugged and need to circle the items around or grab the anvil and place it again to get it to work again.

Did you manage to solve the issue? I'm having the same issue... It worked in the tutorial but no matter what I try in the main game it won't craft anything

The old anvil was too small. This new one does need some refinement though.
Just came here to see if anyone else was having problems with the new anvil. Guess I'm not alone.

I agree the old one was too small, but this new one is too damn finicky. I just spent more than 15 minutes trying to make a single ring. My fire and anvil are right next to each other and I keep the hammer on the floor next to the anvil, so it wasn't like I was fumbling around for things.

I did like I've always done in the past and threw the gem for the ring on the anvil while the gold was still melting in the crucible. Once I poured the ingot, I heated it up and placed it on the anvil roughly in the indent and swung the hammer at the anvil. Nothing. Took a few more swings. Still nothing. Now the ingot's cold and I have to reheat it. Rinse and repeat this a number of times and fail to make a ring.

Finally, I'm like "Please God, don't tell me I have to place things down in the numerical order listed on the anvil." Removed the gem from the anvil and started with the hot ingot, then the gem. Bang, got a ring on the first swing.

What difference does the order of placement make? All the items need to be on the anvil to craft the object, it seems to me as long as they are placed in the correct slots that should be more than sufficient. With the old anvil you could just heap three hot ingots in a pile and hitting the anvil would make a sword.

The whole experience was frustrating and more so because every time I swung the hammer and failed my character would make that annoying "uh?" sound like he had been kicked in the head by a mule when he was a child.
