Is there an overarching goal in this game?
I was just thinking about Hydroneer in comparison to other sandbox games like Terraria and Minecraft. In those games, beyond digging and building, there's the idea of crafting gear for your character, creating an RPG-type scenario for fighting enemies/bosses that appear in the world.

Hydroneer, from what I see, doesn't have enemies like Terraria or Minecraft, and that's perfectly fine by me. It does lead me to wonder, though, what the ultimate point is. I like sandbox games for sure, but I like my games to have a goal so that I have a sense of direction from the time I begin playing.

Each area has a artifact in it and you take the artifacts to the pedastle thing by where you start and then it opens another area. (pretty much like astroneer, just... gold digging for artifacts)

asides of unlocking Davy Jones' plastic treasure chest, i've been exploring different methods of mining & logistics, built 3 different mining structures and about to build my 4th different structure of what could work.

like the sandbox world, exploring and building endless mining structure possibilities

You mean each dig site or just one of them?

Is there an unlimited amount of dirt to dig to go on forever?

No, AFAIK each site has a "bedrock" layer.

So if I empty out all 4 sites plus the 5th secret one I have no more resources?

If you are actually able to clear out all the sites as long as you don't use the pickaxe, then it'd take actual weeks to months to do so.

Also, if you switch to automation, you can use ram drills, they don't use dig dirt but they still get resources. So they'll never run out.

If you still want to do it manually, you can dig up dirt, place it by rightclicking the ground or diggable dirt and keep going that way.
