This game is amazing AND stressful!
I was on the fence getting this game given that I was not sure how it would actually play and whether it was for me. I decided to try it and I am so incredibly grateful that I did. This is hits all the buttons for me of strategy, fantasy, rogue-like, and the sheer level of customization is great.

So far it's been going well, I've done Gildenberg, then Lakeburg, then did Gildenberg on Apocalypse 1. Have not lost a village yet but I just started the third town and it always feels like every night is stressful, wondering what is going to go wrong and if I can even manage to survive it. I can appreciate that and I can only imagine things become much more simple as I unlock a lot of the meta-progression.

By the way, I've loved every weapon so far except for the warshield and sceptre!

Certainly if you replay the first few havens with lots of meta progression unlocked, they can feel rather easy. Even on Apocalypse 6. But past those havens, the game provides a challenge even to players with everything unlocked.

I think I've experienced highs and lows for many of the weapons. The scepter is one weapon which I initially felt "meh" about, but then reconsidered it as a secondary weapon when I watched a friend use it to devastating effect. As a secondary, it provides you with excellent utility (wind walking to get extra MP when you need it and a momentum attack from range). And as a primary, the propagation attack is no joke (and relatively cheap).
Congratulations, and welcome to the (horrifying) party! May your Nights be short and not too dangerous!

...and some consider the war shield to be the current best weapon in game. The perfect weapon for a spiker build. You just stick this guy in the middle of the enemies and let them kill themselves on your spiker. ezpz. Tried one last run and it was untouchable by anything except bosses, and could even kill most elites with just retaliation damage. It's a tad on the boring side... not too much, mind. it still has things to do other than act as a mobile trap, but an unkillable mobile trap is a great thing to have around on most runs.

I'm at about the same place, I've done the first 3 towns died on the 4th so went back and did the first one up to apocalypse 3, lake to apocalypse 2 and the forest to apocalypse 2. Wish I'd gotten the game sooner as it had been on my wishlist for a while.

So far I've found it really hard to not prioritise siege characters, the XP and extra tower damage (and personal ballista overwatch) but I've found a few builds that are quite fun.
I really like the weapon swapping perk with the close range archer perk damage using the pistol to get close and then weapon swap point blank for loads of damage!
On the other end of the spectrum it's hard to beat a good crit longbow+sniper in a tower able to pick of anything for all sides with 1.5k-3k crits with 20tile range as his side kick is force feeding him potion after potion down and using a pair of wands to boost his damage and give him all the energy he needs xD

Wand boosts damage of the wand user, not the hero who gets extra AP and MP.

Wait until people realize you don't need war shield to be untouchable, and you have 2 hands free for better weapons and utility offhands.

If you played with "Every night is stressful" but still score a win.
Then you are the right audience for this game.
If the game let you win every night and made you snoozy, i think the game has serious problem.
