Certainly if you replay the first few havens with lots of meta progression unlocked, they can feel rather easy. Even on Apocalypse 6. But past those havens, the game provides a challenge even to players with everything unlocked.
I think I've experienced highs and lows for many of the weapons. The scepter is one weapon which I initially felt "meh" about, but then reconsidered it as a secondary weapon when I watched a friend use it to devastating effect. As a secondary, it provides you with excellent utility (wind walking to get extra MP when you need it and a momentum attack from range). And as a primary, the propagation attack is no joke (and relatively cheap).
So far I've found it really hard to not prioritise siege characters, the XP and extra tower damage (and personal ballista overwatch) but I've found a few builds that are quite fun.
I really like the weapon swapping perk with the close range archer perk damage using the pistol to get close and then weapon swap point blank for loads of damage!
On the other end of the spectrum it's hard to beat a good crit longbow+sniper in a tower able to pick of anything for all sides with 1.5k-3k crits with 20tile range as his side kick is force feeding him potion after potion down and using a pair of wands to boost his damage and give him all the energy he needs xD
Wait until people realize you don't need war shield to be untouchable, and you have 2 hands free for better weapons and utility offhands.
Then you are the right audience for this game.
If the game let you win every night and made you snoozy, i think the game has serious problem.
