Rifle, unless they've buffed it since I last used it, is indeed booty butt cheeks.
2h axe offers a reasonable amount of mobility and utility. And I did find a use for it in a scroll build (use AP to buff yourself, debuff enemies, use scrolls to clear packs).
With buff duration talent its damage buff stacks for absurd numbers and you can remove debuff with any cleanse if needed. Not a top tier build, but at least something.
There are other terrible weapons aside from the rifle, namely the power staff, magic scepter, and crossbow.
So basically you tap 2 bigger guys in a 2x3 block with basic attack and finish 6 enemies in a quite efficient 4 AP 2 mana combo.
It does fall off when everyone gets more efficient mobility and damage options, but that can take some time.
But some require specific condition to shine.
Some only suitable as sidearm (Pistol, Scepter) for 1 AP deal high single target damage occasionally
Except the hand crossbow, that one is great. And the 1H sword and druid staff are pretty good too. And the dagger, longbow, 1H Ax, tome, both hammers, the spear, tome, 2H Sword and ax, staff, orb and scepter. And I guess the pistol, rifle, and crossbow are good in specific builds.
That leaves the magic wand; I never see anyone defend the magic wand. [wand defender enters chat in 3…2…]
My least favorite is the Crossbow. It's powerful but it's skills are so clunky it's hard to use. Same with the power staff, it seems great in theory but in practice it's hard to use.
I think the Scepter is amazing. Just did a 1,000 damage momentum hit with one. The one AP hit 4 monsters is great, the movement/dodge buff is excellent utility, the propagation damage and stun move is great as well especially with improved stun chance and extra propagation bounces.
I've had good luck with the Rifle. You do need 6 or more AP, but you can really snipe the most dangerous monsters with ease and massively slow huge groups. The range and damage are superb.
My favorite is the Druid staff. The poison damage is just enormous and ignores armor. The AOE movement reduction skill is super useful. And the single target DPS can be enormous with opportunism.
I've seen reasonable magic wand builds, but whatever wands can do hand crossbow can do better.
Except assist someone. Early game consolidating AP on a character with best weapon is quite helpful.
Still, legendary assassin crit-mage with some scrolls for aoe can be a bootleg hand crossbow user and solo hold the side just fine.
The early game is more interesting (play with whatever, decide when it is time to improve).
The mid game also exciting, prioritize finding really good weapons or still use the available bad one but higher level maybe, or better random improvement.
In the late game it is really important to find the good weapons...if you also selected the correct perks :)
It's a decent pace, enabled by the somewhat high variety of weapons and equipment/items.
Some of them are niche, and are really good at that niche
Pretty much unwinnable on high difficulty.
Even a sword or axe user will love to have a dagger.
Rifle is probably the worst just because it's normal attack guzzles so much AP.
