With 20% increase in costs that comes with apo-4 you are better off just demolishing stuff on day 1 and buying some essentials like second weapons, mana potions or scrolls that let you get to day5 while building barely anything except gold mines -- you still will be able to get two of them online by then.
But remove ruins as much as you can is definitely not optimal. In general, day 1 you can upgrade to 4~6 worker and remove one 4-worker ruin and build gold mine. And for the rest of the gold just pick some powerful items from shop or just buy some potion is fine as well.
day two you can have 8 workers, I don't recommend have 10 workers in day 2, since it's hard to use them effectively in day3. Instead, upgrade as far as you can with your first gold mine.
After day 4, build order become more diverse as every run we just got different RNG. But there still some order that I almost do in every run
Seer -> bowyer(or other weapon shop) -> Inn -> temple or mana well -> armor maker
In some run, bowyer can switch into second gold mine, if you got super powerful items from shop
*Note that I build bowyer early since IMO, short bow is powerful without any other gear required, long bow is great for coverage, cross bow is super powerful when you got multi hit and propagation in end game. In some cases I even switch the origin melee or mage hero into range weapon, if the start weapon is too bad
In additional do you build some defense, catapult or ballista?
I don't build an early bowyer because lvl1 bow stops one-shotting regular mobs quite fast unlike lvl1 melee weapons, and I'd rather buy 1-2 decent weapons in shop instead of trying to roll the dice.
As for materials you cannot get wrong with an early catapult or two as you don't have resources for anything else meaningful.
Once you actually start getting decent numbers, either build a teleport network or find a pocket or two where to build ballistas.
Ideally placed so mobs won't directly pressure them much and will walk past and get shredded instead.

Yes, using your workers to scavenge (gold focus) day 1 is absolutely a great way to kick start your economy. It is impossible to generate more gold and the best part is that those workers are ALWAYS fully used every single day going forward. Building a gold mine on day 1 will not result in more income, even by day 9.
Use the Guide Index on the right to navigate to the "Day 1 - Glenwald" section and start reading there, there are tons of other helpful tips as well if you are so inclined to read the entire thing.
I've tried to put a lot of detail, especially into the day to day breakdowns for both Lakeberg and Glenwald.
