Monster Train on the Steam Deck

Hello Lovely Community!

We're sure a lot of you are excited about the Steam Deck coming out this week and have some questions. With that in mind, we’ve been playing Monster Train there! Out of the box, we got the game running except for the intro video which wants to play upside down 🙃.

PC Gamer recently did a test of their favorite games for Steam Deck and, of course, Monster Train was included. Here’s their assessment if you want to read more. LINK

With that in mind, if you encounter any egregious issues native to the Steam deck that prevents gameplay, please let us know in this thread.

Wooo so looking forward to play this game on the steam deck.

I did want to ask a question, if it's playable how come it says unsupported on the steam store?

as one of your existing customers who has enjoyed 400 hours of playing the game on linux through steam proton compatibility tools, this is completely unsurprising! -- the game seems to run flawlessly on linux with the sole exception of the videos, which are either blank / replaced with a test pattern, or actually work normally, depending on the vagaries of the proton version, my linux distro, versions of drivers installed, etc. i guess the good news is that (at least for me) the videos are completely peripheral to the enjoyment of the game!

at least for steam deck you have fixed hardware + fixed linux distro to target, so it should be easier to pin down codecs that work reliably, if you want to advertise steam deck support!

For some reason, when I first started the game on my Deck, none of my buttons seemed to work on the main menu. Restarting the game solved the issue, so not a showstopper, just figured I'd let you folks know!

The steamdeck page today shows monster train as being in the tested/unsupported category

That's really odd I'm sure it was "playable" when I last checked the store. I wonder if the developer knows anything about this?

I use the shiny shoe layout on steam deck, but it will not use my joysticks to scroll through menu's... I can't play properly with the built in controller bindings. Restarting seems to work sometimes, but still seems weird.

I want to buy it to play it on the Steam Deck. Is it working on the Steam Deck now? Why does Steam say the game is not supported? If it's working I will buy it. Thanks.

playing it on linux/proton for a year, works fine. just tested on deck and it seems fine except intro video is black.

Yeah, intro video seems to be the only thing not working. Black screen just sat there until I pressed a button.
