How save game progress work

Thinking purchasing this game but I was wondering how the save game works? Can I save in the mid game like quit in the middle then auto save or I just have to keep running on check point in order to save before quit?

Autosaves every time you make a decision on the "worldmap" so to speak, combat state doesn't save, so exiting and coming back restarts combats from the beginning.

Basically at very worst you'll lose 1 combat stage ( if you quit during that combat ), which will only take you a few minutes to replay. The loss is so trivial that backing out to the main menu during combat is a tool people use when they screw something up during combat.

Ah ok thanks. As long the combat doesn't take ages, I'm ok with it

It doesn't. At max speed settings, often a minute or so per combat once you're comfortable with the game.
