I’ve only successfully used him once, with awoken restores. I think I also had a pair of wildwood saps, and got the double healing from regen artifact later. A holdover full heal could probably work too, though would be a lot worse for bosses.
Of course, at some point you will also need to be able to snipe back liners before they just 1-round solgard, but stygian has ways to do that.
I don’t think he’s great, but I also don’t have a whole lot of experience using him, so maybe there are others that can provide more/better tips.
It will trigger revenge multiple times per round, and it doesn't really take a ton of effort to keep him up through the end. So no, it's not just triggering revenge only twice in late game, he will still trigger dozens of times. Also it doesn't actually have to survive for it's frostbite to keep ticking. That's important because he will often die to end game bosses, but before he's gone he should have allowed you to put on hundreds or even thousands of frostbite stacks.
He's so strong because you only need to focus on keeping him alive and you win. You play a spell that heals him.. his damage scales up. You play a spell to give him armor.. his damage scales up. You play a spell to sap enemies ( don't sap below 1 attack!! you want him to get hit ).. his damage scales up. You play a spell to snipe a high damage back row enemy.. his damage goes up.
It doesn't synergize well with every house, but if you can heal or armor it shouldn't be hard to make it work.

He certainly can't win on his own, but few champions can. But with the right support, he's a total monster, especially when it gets to relentless.
