I had/have a lot of fun, but..
Monster train is absolutely amazing and crafted with care in every single aspects, I cannot do any complain about this.

But, I bought it because I wanted to "rage out" like slay the spyre, and I was expecting a lot of struggling. It took me weeks (if not months) of casual daily playing to beat the final boss.
With the huge surprise that when you think you beat it, the game is finished - but this doesn't happen until you beat the boss with all factions and only THEN you are allowed to fight the true final boss, that you really need an excellent plan (and/or luck) to defeat it with your deck.

In monster train, in just a week I managed to reach the end station and beat the final boss. I barely used/experimented the champion of the other factions.

Now it's true that as "completionist" I can keep playing it to unlock all cards of different factions. It's clear as well I can raise the difficulty to get an harder challenge.

But I am missing the true "purpose" for doing it. Unless I am unaware that there IS another boss after I win a run with each faction?
If this is the case then I take back all I said - otherwise, please make something similar for a future update, in the way I can find a motivation to keep playing and reach a true end / final new boss fight!

For most of us here it was the opposite. In StS once you reach the heart there is nothing new to see. You realize that it is essentially a gear check. All you have to do is sit down and figure out the numbers and find what can beat it (as opposed to finding fun builds). The game is as good as over at this point.

In MT, the main motivation to play is the sheer fun of playing and the huge variety the game offers, and also many enjoy completing the logbook or climbing the Covenant ranks.

Of course, as we have said in the past, different people like different challenges and many prefer the single point challenge of StS. As I too have said, I would love some extra content beyond a standard run, like a secret extra layer. Let's face it, the frozen heart is the perfect setting for one huge secret final fight that we will need to unlock! To the best of my knowledge this does not exist, but it kinda feels that the game was designed with that encounter in mind and I sure hope we get it in a future update.

No, there`s no Secret Boss yet.
MT is still relatively new, it took more than a year for StS to add the last level, there`s still time.

As the "true" purpose...
Being a roguelike, this kind of game is usually played over and over to get better and reach a point where you can consistently win at the hardest difficulty... that`s pretty much it.
Personal satisfaction (and rolling you eyes really hard when people complain about math and RNG)

That`s called "enjoying Casual play"

But you`re right.
There a bunch of people here that, every time, love to hold StS accountable for being casual-impaired :conwayshrug:

You can play StS pretty casually too. Though I guess if you aren't into card games then both games have a somewhat steep learning curve... but that is part of the roguelite experience anyway. Try, fail, improve, win.

There is no secret boss, but there is a ton of variety between runs, from different clans, different bosses, cards and how you upgrade your champion. If you enjoy the mechanics you can play a ton and experiment with different builds (much more than in StS). If you want, you can try and master the game by winning covenant 25 which is what I set myself as the end goal.

However, if you are driven to reach the end of the story, then, you've done it, there is nothing the game can offer more, as it was probably not the focus the devs had.

Thanks for the replies.
I keep the faith for a future update. Anyway you are right, it's not because I reached the end of the story that I archive it - I will play at least to unlock all cards, that's for sure ;)

Exactly. StS has quite a few things that MT can be envious of, but MT is still being developped, and more actively so than StS. It's not impossible we will some day get a new circle of hell, or a new final boss, or a new Cov rank, etc... MT has a lot of potential clearly, and it'll almost certainly get more updates in the future.

StS feels kind of at a standstill in its development where not much can easily be added to the game besides new characters. They have been slowed down by console ports aswell, so maybe they'll be more active now, but they probably rely on modding to extend the game's lifespan anyway.

If MT had modding with a good modding community, that alone would skyrocket the value of the game for a lot of people. I do wish MT had longer runs and maybe a story final boss like StS though.

IIRC I beat the basic difficulty level of Monser Train in one sitting, took me just 2-3 tries.
At first, I was disappointed, but then I realized that the Covenant mode is much more fun and thoughtfully crafted than the Endless mode in Slay the Spire, and unlike the latter it feels like integral part of the game rather than something slapped on top. (don't @ me on that)
So here I am now, 30 hours into the game, still progressing towards that elusive (as of yet) Covenant rank 25, and still unlocking new stuff.
(FWIW I'm not a huge StS player but I loved the game and beat the stage 4 boss with all 3 characters, yet 2 out of 3 of those runs were very underwhelming and not fun at all.)

Yeah, I am still playing it anyway, at least to unlock all cards, the fun is anyway always there. Just a little tweak to add a second boss after you unlock all heroes/card would make it perfect :)

Since when is MT a "roguelike"? It has absolutely nothing to do with this genre.

MT is part of the deck building genre.

It literally has a roguelite tag on the game's store page? It is a deck building roguelite. They are not mutually exclusive genres.

I just play MT because its fun and thats it. I finally beat Cov25 with every single clan combination as that was my goal. I also enjoyed doing the daily challenges. I hope they add more circles or secrets bosses to the game later, but they have already added so much in such little time, so I'm sure more content is not too long away.

Tags are set by users. Since when did tags get important? It is like you are telling me that most one word reviews are relevant.

What I'm getting annoyed by mainly is that every single game in existence getting out in the past two years or so are "tagged roguelike"...

Nowadays, short games with a focus on replayability are commonly referred to as "roguelikes/lites"... right or wrong, you might have to accept that...
or you can keep getting annoyed and complain on random threads, that works too i guess :conwayshrug:

There is truth to what you just said. Unfortunately it is also why the gaming scene has so much trouble in the past few years.

It has "runs" and (semi)random setups with progression systems and unlockables. If you die, it's back at the start for you with most progress lost. It's also arguably difficult. All of the above traits are found in roguelike/lite games like Isaac or, more recently, Hades.

Most roguelikes also have procedurally generated levels and some other aspects which this game does not, but it's similar enough that IMO the tag makes sense.
