Sort of? There's a limited amount of unlockables of cards. But otherwise, yes, fresh start.

The model is identical to Slay the Spire, except that your starting cards are a bit more randomized.

Yes, you do.

You do, but I wasn't aware that that was the distinction between "Roguelike" and "Roguelite". Don't both involve short playthroughs?

I believe the term roguelite refers specifically to a game that has permadeath however also has some form of permanent progression. Examples would include games like dead cells and risk of rain.

Roguelike is a bit more debatable, the most frequent definition is a game that has permadeath and lacks forms of permanent progression. The other definition is a game that is like rogue, ie something like tales of majayal.

Based on these definitions monster train falls firmly into the camp of roguelite.

You are mixing the Roguelikes, mostly because there isn`t a single definition
(mind you, there isn`t even a "real" definition since nobody could canonize it)

Originally (and for the Purists) Rogue-like meant "a game Like Rogue"
and that means A GAME LIKE ROGUE PERIOD, basically just Adom, ToME and similar stuff.

The term evolved, and now Rogue-like usual encompass any "game with Permadeath, procedurally generated content and no progression between runs"
Unlocks are usually acceptable, as long as they aren`t direct upgrades
(Purists "downgrade" this kind of games to Rogue-like-like or roguelites)

A Roguelite is something similar to a "new" Rogue-like, but when you die you get stronger for future runs.
I guess the canonizing game here was Rogue Legacy.
(and we are too far removed from Rogue for the Purists)

So there is some form of progression like ascensions and act4 like slay the spire?
In modern term, because games already evolving to a point that definition should be changed.
I treat them like this Especially when every games now reaching game mechanic like skill tree and perk unlock in shooter, rts, or card mechanic in some strategy / arena based games..

Rogue-like:
You can have progression, but it should be in term of "unlocking" stuff. This include more stuff to play with, more monster, more difficulty, more option.
(Monster Train, Slay the spire, Enter the gungeon, Binding of Isaac, Risk of Rain etc)

Rogue-lite:
Generally more like permanent upgrade that improve your next run. If you play those games, you will notice the game get distinctly much easier with more time / level you input to the games.
(Rogue Legacy, Immortal Redneck, and probably some more i forgot)

Unlike traditional games with normal level progression, Rogue game designed to be about getting "a good run" from start to the end, which generally randomize and rewarding godly luck.

(Let be frank, there will no real rogue-like unless you have turn based mechanic)

Yes. There are 25 levels of ascension (called covenant).
