The way it actually works is that you cannot give Holdover to a consume card, but you CAN give consume to a holdover card. This is because sometimes you'll have a card with holdover that you'll want to buff with an effect that gives it consume, but you'll never have a consume card that you can make stay with Holdover so the game stops you.
That's actually a really thorough answer, thank you. I read the tooltips of course - my assumption was that it would simply be consumed and the holdover wouldn't take effect, unless I had Wing Clippings (or something else with a similar effect?), in which case presumably it would have a 50% chance of being in my hand next turn (rather than going straight to the discard pile) and a 50% chance of being consumed as normal.
Either way, the explanation for why it would let me apply the Surgestone to the card makes a lot of sense. I'm only on my second run so far, so I'm still learning the ropes. :)
Good luck with the game, it gets a little more complicated as you go but it can be a lot of fun when you realize hidden combos with things you underestimated before.
Far from an amazing combo or anything, but doing so allowed the unit to survive one more enemy attack that turn and the revenge effect let me play the final card in my hand, too.
